  • Strangers in the right way: Care across theological difference

    Chris D Clements, Peter Bush•ARTICLE•Practical Theology•2023

Pastoral work will at times involve care practices with persons who do not share common theological (and political) commitments with the caregiver. Within the dynamics of pastoral encounters, it may not be viable for a caregiver to simply bracket their commitments. At a point where pastoral action must navigate this difference, Miroslav Volf's encouragement to be a 'stranger in the right way' offers caregivers an interpretive metaphor for guiding…

  • The meek ambassador: Pastoral power and Christian leadership

    Chris D Clements, Peter Bush•ARTICLE•Practical Theology•2022

The power granted to persons in Christian pastoral leadership is delegated for benevolent exercise. Yet with this power may also come the temptation to exercise power in self-interest. In this paper, we explore the image of the ambassador, as a means of providing moral vision for the exercise of pastoral power. An ambassador works collaboratively with other emissaries in order to faithfully convey messages from a sender. We suggest this image aff…

  • Reflections on attending the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba’s Award for the Advancement of Interreligious Understanding Ceremony

    Peter Bush•ARTICLE•Religious Studies and Theology•2020

The Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of Manitoba annually presents an Award for the Advancement of Interreligious Understanding. Such an award being created in a twenty-first century secular democracy is atypical. This essay examines the motivation behind the award’s creation and describes some of the recipients. The lack of religious practices during the award ceremonies suggests that state agents can talk about religion, applauding religion’…

  • Travelling in Translation

    Peter Bush•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of French…•2020

Translation takes their makers to fresh imaginary worlds with each new commission. It can also lead them to places they don’t know in the real world and lead to unanticipated changes of direction in their lives and art. This essay explores the routes via which one translator, myself, moved from working with two literary exiles, Spaniard Juan Goytisolo and Uruguyan Juan Carlos Onetti, to translating Cuban and Catalan writers. Becoming a full-time …

  • The Presbyterian Church in Canada and the Pope: One denomination's struggle with its confessional history

This paper explores how The Presbyterian Church in Canada has sought to balance the confessional nature of the church with its changing views of the Roman Catholic Church. Choosing not to amend the Westminster Confession of Faith, the church has adopted expla…

S This paper is a statistical and geological study of the results of analysis of flint from British and West European flint mines, carried out by emission and atomic absorption spectroscopy. Groups of flint specimens were studied from each geographically separate flint mining area. Flints were analysed for a group of easily measured trace elements shown by previous work to be generally present. The ratios between the trace elements form a consist…

  • Pop Records and Connotative Satiation: Test of Jakobovits' Theory

    Open Access•Peter Bush, P A Bush et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

An experiment is described in which adolescent schoolgirls rated on a 7-point good-bad scale, the repeated presentations of an extract from a current popular record. Mean ratings moved from the good end of the scale toward the indifference point with repetition. Coincident with this was the tendency for individual ratings to move toward the poles of the scale with repetition. These findings are inconsistent with the analysis of ‘pop’ music popula…
