Age-related and sex-specific differences in the prevalence of negative responses to online body shaming among teenagers aged 11-17
Background Online body shaming is a common appearance-based online risk for adolescents and may trigger diverse negative behavioral, relational, and cognitive-emotional responses. Age-related patterns in these responses across adolescence remain insufficiently described. Methods In a population-based cross-sectional school survey conducted in the Czech Republic (Feb 1–May 1, 2022), 9393 adolescents aged 11–17 years participated (avg. 14.4 ± 1.6; …
Patterns of Cognitive‐Emotional Responses to Online Body Shaming and Pathological Behavior Odds Among Adolescents (11–17)
Online body shaming is common in adolescence and linked to a range of maladaptive outcomes. This study examined whether discrete cognitive–emotional responses to online body shaming are differentially associated with somatization, escaping behavior, eating‐disorder behaviors, and substance use, and whether these associations vary by age or sex. In a cross‐sectional, school‐based survey, 2441 Czech adolescents (11–17 years) who reported online bod…
Adaptation to the School Environment Moderates the Effect of Skill‐Specific Performance on Pupils' School Achievement in the First Grade of Elementary School
The transition from kindergarten to the first grade of elementary school is a crucial developmental period that can significantly influence pupils' academic trajectories. This study aimed to examine whether adaptation to the school environment moderates the relationship between skill‐specific performance and academic achievement in two core subjects—Czech language and mathematics. A longitudinal design was employed involving 702 first‐grade pupil…
Brains, cogs, and square-headed robots: Anthropomorphisation of artificial intelligence in icons
Through quantitative semiotic analysis, the study investigates how icons bear the meaning of artificiality and synthetization. This research analyses a corpus of icons sampled from Web sites offering digital graphic assets to recognize and measure the prevalence of different motives. It reveals that some icons may inappropriately simplify or support a false representation of a given technology, such as excessive anthropomorphization of artificial…
Path analysis reveals cross-country differences between Czech and Chinese university students in effect of internet and smartphone addiction, mental health, and personality traits on academic achievem…
Despite extensive evidence on the impact of various mental health issues including smartphone/internet addiction, and personality traits on academic achievement, little is known about the complex interactions between multiple of these factors simultaneously, as well as cross-country differences in these nuanced relationships. In particular, understanding the role of the mentioned addictions has become increasingly important in recent years in the…
Validation of the Factor Structure and Gender-Related Measurement Invariance of the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors (Short Form): Proposing an Alternative Design
The aim of this paper was to validate the factor structure and gender-related measurement invariance of the short form of the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors (ISSB). The study sample consisted of 710 undergraduate students aged 19–55 years. A confirmatory factor analysis of the original design confirmed a three-factor structure with an acceptable goodness of fit (CFI = 0.910, TLI = 0.894, RMSEA = 0.066) and validity; however, some indi…

Risk Factors Underlying Covid-19 Lockdown-Induced Mental Distress
Recent reports suggest that the COVID-19 lockdown resulted in changes in mental health, however, potential age-related changes and risk factors remain unknown. We measured COVID-19 lockdown-induced stress levels and the severity of depressive symptoms prior to and during the COVID-19 lockdown in different age groups and then searched for potential risk factors in a well-characterized general population-based sample. A total of 715 participants we…
Culturally Relevant Resilience: A Psychometric Meta‐Analysis of the Child and Youth Resilience Measure (Cyrm)
Measuring key components of resilience is vital for understanding cross-cultural dynamics among youth and the environment. The Child and Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM-28) was developed as a cross-cultural measure of resilience and has been used globally. To examine the cross-cultural utility of the CYRM-28, we conducted a systematic review of the literature reporting on the psychometric properties of the measure. Using data representing six coun…
Cluster Analysis of Jumps on Capital Markets
Cluster Analysis of Jumps on Capital Markets We analyze the behavior and performance of multiple price jump indicators across capital markets and over time. By using high-frequency we perform cluster analysis of price jump indicators that share similar properties in terms of their performance in that they minimize Type I and Type II errors. We show that clusters of price jump indicators do not exhibit equal size. Clusters are stable across stock …
Price Jumps during Financial Crisis: From Intuition to Financial Regulation
In this paper, we employ the high-frequency data from Prague Stock Exchange (PSE) and New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to analyse the variation in extreme price movements and market volatility around the period of fall of Lehman Brothers. The sample ranges from January 2008 to July 2009. We employ the price jump indicators optimal with respect to Type-I and Type-II errors. The former one shows an increase in market volatility and extreme price move…
