Does Home Production Replace Consumption Spending? Evidence from Shocks in Housing Wealth in the Great Recession
Becker's theory of home production suggests substitutability between consumption spending and home production. Using panel data with detailed information on spending and time use, we analyze households' ability to replace consumption spending by home-produced counterparts. Keeping wages fixed and changing lifetime resources by the shock to housing wealth during the Great Recession, we estimate an elasticity of substitution that is consistent with…
Measuring Probability Numeracy
Probability numeracy is the ability of individuals to think in probabilistic terms and use probabilities effectively in everyday life. Measuring probability numeracy helps to understand how well individuals can plan for uncertainty, such as the likelihood of losing a job over the next year, and to identify groups who make suboptimal life decisions because of their limited understanding of probabilities. In this paper, we explore different batteri…
Disease Incidence and Mortality Among Older Americans and Europeans
Recent research has shown a widening gap in life expectancy at age 50 between the United States and Europe as well as large differences in the prevalence of diseases at older ages. Little is known about the processes determining international differences in the prevalence of chronic diseases. Higher prevalence of disease could result from either higher incidence or longer disease-specific survival. This article uses comparable longitudinal data f…
Measuring Total Household Spending in a Monthly Internet Survey: Evidence from the American Life Panel
Beginning in May 2009 we fielded a monthly Internet survey designed to measure total household spending as the aggregate of about 40 spending components. This paper reports on a number of outcomes from 30 waves of data collection. These outcomes include sample attrition, indicators of data quality such as item nonresponse and the variance in total spending, and substantive results such as the trajectory of total spending and the trajectories of s…
Intervivos Giving Over the Lifecycle
Describes financial transfers made by parents to children and their correlation with donor characteristics such as age, and looks at how transfers reflect changes in marital status, economic status, and health
Inter-vivos giving by older people in the United States: Who received financial gifts from the childless
Inter-vivos financial transfers from older parents to their adult children are widespread in the United States. Childless people may simply make fewer transfers. On the other hand, because their giving is away from children, their decisions are more complex in that there are multiple potential targets of approximately equal attractiveness. Using data for 1996 to 2004 from the United States Health and Retirement Study , this article examines the d…

Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old: An Overview of the Ahead Study
This chapter provides background information for the study of Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old (AHEAD), a prospective panel survey of persons born in 1923 or earlier who were residing in the community at the time of the 1993 baseline. Interviews were sought with both spouses in married households, and an overall total of 8,222 were completed. We review the interdisciplinary scientific issues that motivated the study, describe the fu…
