Assessing the perceived effectiveness of a Montessori-influenced trauma-informed practice (TIP) programme for contemporary early childhood teachers
Childhood adversity and trauma are widespread and there is increased recognition of the need for trauma-informed practice (TIP) which recognises the potentially long-term impact of trauma on individuals. Historical evidence shows that early Montessori schools were widely reputed to promote psychological healing in trauma-affected children. The aim of this study was to explore the perceived effectiveness, in terms of knowledge, attitudes, beliefs,…

Enhanced Vulnerability of Asylum Seekers in Times of Crisis
This article examines the impact of law and policy changes enacted in times of crisis on asylum seekers, and considers the extent to which considerations of vulnerability have played a part in the various approaches of governments. What emerges is a shift towards further exclusion, and a widening divide between how states approach citizens versus others. The result is enhanced vulnerability, and an environment in which the utility of the vulnerab…

Detention of Child Asylum Seekers in the Pursuit of State Interests: A Comparison of the Australian and EU Approaches
The widespread use of detention of asylum seekers as a form of controlling borders and migration is an acknowledged reality that carries a particular significance in cases where children are involved. Many studies provide evidence on the detrimental impact of detention, especially when this measure affects particularly vulnerable persons. This article is an inquiry into the detention of child asylum seekers in Australia and the European Union (EU…

Role of the employment status and education of mothers in the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in Mexican rural schoolchildren
Intestinal parasitism remains an important public health problem in Sinaloa (north-western Mexico) and Oaxaca (south-eastern Mexico). Lower income, defecation in open areas, employment status and a lower education level of mothers were the significant factors related to these infections. We conclude that mothers should be involved in health initiatives to control intestinal parasitism in Mexico
Teasing, rejection, and violence: Case studies of the school shootings
Media commentators have suggested that recent school shootings were precipitated by social rejection, but no empirical research has examined this claim. Case studies were conducted of 15 school shootings between 1995 and 2001 to examine the possible role of social rejection in school violence. Acute or chronic rejection—in the form of ostracism, bullying, and/or romantic rejection—was present in all but two of the incidents. In addition, the shoo…

passage. The two glees under notice have never before been published. This seems strange considering their Gossian attributes. But better late than never. The independence of the part-writing places them well in the category of the glee, and all the voices are well provided with tuneful phrases.' 0! little harbinger of day' is the more extended composition of the pair. The ' cheerfully, but not too quick' opening movement in quadruple rhythm gives pla…

Nishitani is a Buddhist thinker not so much in drawing on the rich history of classical Buddhist philosophy as in drawing on his sense of the value of Buddhist meditation (zazen in Japanese) and meditational experiences. The Buddhist works he cites are…
