  • The (broken) promise of queerbaiting: Happiness and futurity in politics of queer representation

    Open Access•Michael Mcdermott•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 7

‘Queerbaiting’ is a pejorative fan-coined term that refers to the media practice of deliberately hinting at, or advertising, queer representation to attract and gain the investments of LGBTQ viewers without ever following through on this promise. Utilizing a range of queer theories of affect as well as data gathered from online discussions with fans, this article explores how fans are reading, conceptualizing, and mobilizing concepts of queerness…

  • Dos Hambres to Gran Cacao Archaeological Mapping

    Michael Mcdermott•ARTICLE•Humboldt Journal of Social…•2019

This map displays the spatial relationships and distribution of residential features throughout a portion of the Maya hinterlands near the site of Dos Hombres in Northwest Belize. Combining high resolution LiDAR data with detailed archaeology field data has allowed for accurate mapping of the features in this Mayan landscape. A unique aspect of this particular site is the presence of a causeway or “sacbe” which was used by the ancient Mayan peopl…

Open Access•Robert J Berkowitz, Hyun Koo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2009

PI coupled with dental surgery has a significant suppressive effect on salivary MS levels in the setting of S-ECC for at least 90 days. These data strongly suggest that treatment with PI may be an important adjunct to dental surgery for S-ECC

  • A Science of Intention

    Michael Mcdermott•ARTICLE•The Philosophical Quarterly•2009•References: 2

Quine's key argument against intentional psychology is that belief ascriptions have no determinate empirical content unless we take facts about linguistic meaning for granted, but meaning claims have no determinate empirical content unless we take belief for granted. I try to show that, on the contrary, an intentional psychology can explain behaviour without relying on any concept of meaning

Michael Mcdermott, Inc Journal of Philosophy et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Philosophy•2002

  • The Value of Patient-Reported Health Status in Predicting Short-Term Outcomes After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

    Lesley H Curtis, Charles E Phelps et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2002•References: 27

BACKGROUND: Risk stratification for comparison of outcomes after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) typically includes only clinical measures of risk. Patient-reported health status may be an important independent predictor of short-term health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patient-reported health status, as measured by the Physical and Mental Component Summary scores of the SF-36, predicts in-hospital mortality and prolonged leng…

  • Disease Progression in HIV-Positive Women With Moderate to Severe Immunosuppression: The Role of Depression

Kavita Vedhara, Kav Vedhara et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•1999

Thirty-seven HIV-positive women were recruited in a 2-year prospective investigation into the role of depression in HIV disease progression. All participants had CD4+ cell counts of 200 or less at baseline and at least 3 CD4+ cell counts during follow-up. Participants were evaluated semiannually for CD4+ lymphocyte counts, B2Microglobulin (B2M), hemoglobin data, and new AIDS-defining illnesses. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scal…

    Robert J Rydman, Miriam L Isola et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1998•References: 10

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine if an accelerated treatment protocol administered to acute asthmatics presenting to a Hospital Emergency Department Observation Unit (EDOU) can offset the need for inpatient admissions and reduce total cost per episode of care without sacrificing patient quality of life. METHODS: The authors used a prospective randomized controlled trial comparing postintervention patient quality of life for EDOU c…
