  • There and Back Again? Exploring the Real-Time Cognitive Journey of Narrative Transportation

    Open Access•John M Tchernev, James Collier et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Research•2023

Prior research has produced seemingly conflicting indications of whether or not audience members who are transported into a narrative leave themselves and the real world behind. This study proposes that a dynamic perspective can help resolve that conflict. Both traditional static post-exposure and real-time dynamic measures were used to examine four cognitive processes: attention, presence, self-referencing, and real world-referencing. Participan…

  • Narrative Engagement and Vicarious Interaction with Multiple Characters

    Shu‐Fang Lin, Katherine R Dale et al.•ARTICLE•Mass Communication & Society•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This study investigates how audience members relate to and vicariously interact with multiple characters while viewing a narrative. Under the framework of the theory of situation models, we applied a real-time thought-listing technique that incorporated Twitter and focused on three debuting TV dramas to explore how the participants followed multiple characters while watching prime-time television dramas. We examined 3,274 tweets across the three …

  • Geographic Regions of Missouri∗

James E Collier, James Collier•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1955•References: 1

RTS HE State of Missouri is geographically diverse. Several systems of areal subdivision of Missouri have been developed, some complete for the entire state and some for major areas within the state, notably the Ozark region. Few of these have considered several or all of the component elements of the total pattern; most have been limited in scope and purpose. This paper attempts to synthesize the many and varying areal patterns into a system of …

  • Aluminum Resources of the United States

    James E Collier, James Collier•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1948

jN November, 1941, the United States Geological Survey estimated our known bauxite reserves at little more than 18,000,000 tons of commercially usable ore, plus about 11,000,000 tons of low-grade ore. From 1936 to 1940 we consumed on the average slightly less than 400,000 tons annually, and in addition imported almost an equal amount. On this basis, known resources then would have met our needs for about 45 years. Even meeting all our requirement…

  • Aluminum Industry of Europe

    James E Collier, James Collier•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1946

country possessed all requisite elements for its manufacture, well located with respect to one another. During the years of war many changes took place. Little information is available regarding details of the modifications in the industry, although definite trends were evident during the preceding years. The postwar situation will no doubt differ from both prewar and wartime conditions. However, analysis of known facts serves to determine geogra…

  • The Theory of Colonization

James Collier, James H Collier•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1905•Cited by: 1

Two opposite notions of colonies are widely prevalent. Perhaps the commoner opinion is, or used to be, that colonists walk about everywhere in their shirt sleeves, get from one place to another in open boats, and, when the humor seizes them, promiscuously fire off pistols on the streets. "There will be none of your kind out there," said an old Scotch lady to a disabled literary worker who was about to emigrate to the Antipodes. That there could b…
