Riots, strikes and Soviets: The city of Tver in 1905
Making use of mostly local sources (including previously closed archives), this article examines the upheaval of 1905 in the city of Tver. Textiles dominated Tver’s industry and yet, while textile workers were among the most brutally exploited in all Russia, in Tver they only gradually embraced the revolutionary movement. The defenders of the status quo in the city were vastly better organised and were quick to use violence. After the failure of …
The heartland turns red: The Bolshevik seizure of power in Tver
On the basis of newspaper accounts, memoirs and previously closed archives, this article describes and analyses the Bolshevik rise to power in the provincial capital of Tver, with some remarks on Bolshevik activities in the countryside of Tver guberniia. In early 1917, the party was among the weakest political groups in the city but by the end of the year, they had taken control in a virtually peaceful revolution. Their success was attributable t…

Stalin's Drive to the West, 1938-1945: The Origins of the Cold War
From a Bolshevik to a British Subject: The Early Years of Maksim M. Litvinov
Maksim M. Litvinov was the most colorful and controversial of the major European diplomats in the 1930s. As Henry Roberts has observed, Litvinov's "chubby and unproletarian figure radiated an aura of robust and businesslike common sense that was in striking contrast to the enigmatic brutality of the Politburo." But this cultured and reflective man served that Politburo for the better part of his life, and he did so until his disillusionment overw…
Mission to America: Maksim M. Litvinov in the United States, 1941?43
On 7 December 1941, Maksim M. Litvinov arrived in the United States to begin his turbulent and frustrating tenure as the Soviet ambassador. The ambassadorship marked the climax of a diplomatic career that began in 1918, when Litvinov was the Bolshevik representative in Great Britain. Subsequently he had been deputy commissar for foreign affairs in the 1920s and commissar for foreign affairs from 1930 to 1939. As commissar, he had been a leading a…
