For many families, the combination of subsidies and tax-based supports results in significant cost reductions. However,…

The Swan Brand: Reframing the Legacy of Anna Pavlova
How does legendary status evolve in the world of ballet? Are the most brilliant dance figures simply bound to be recognized by the public and discerning critics alike? Or does historical importance depend on specific strategies? Or on the serendipity of circumstance? Joan Acocella notes that genius owes much to “ego strength” as well as luck (2007, xii). Perhaps the element of fame is always interlocked with market forces, even in the dance world…
Proprioceptive Friction: Waiting in Line to Sit with Marina Abramović
This article examines Marina Abramović's epic performance, The Artist is Present, staged within her eponymous retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. For the duration of the exhibition, Abramović sat in MoMA's atrium from the time the museum opened until it closed. Across from her was a chair where anyone could sit and meet her eyes in a silent gaze. The text inquires into the affect of presence as it implicated not only the…

Tulle as Tool: Embracing the Conflict of the Ballerina as Powerhouse
The image and interpretation of the ballerina has shifted over time since she first took her place in the pantheon of romantic female performers in the early nineteenth century. For many, she is still romanticized, respected, and revered; in other circles, she has become suspect as a creature who may be obsessed, exploited, and retrogressive in light of the egalitarian strides women have made or are still trying to make. The female ballet dancer'…

Onstage, a nineteenth-century German girl waits for her first encounter with the Middle East, which will come courtesy of Tchaikovsky and the many years of choreographic evolution that have preceded the current version of The Nutcracker in which she is performing. The girl's name is Clara (or sometimes Marie), and she has come to a fantasy land, where a lively Spanish dance has been given in her honor. Now, there is softer, slower music with a st…
