Drawing as research
There is contemporary interest in drawing practice as a research method in geography. This paper gathers aligned insights from visual studies and geography to deconstruct humanistic processes involved in researcher seeing and representation. Seeing is critiqued as a socio-cultural practice that can affirm intersectional injustices and suffering. I argue that to resist humanist interpretations of the more-than-human world, it is necessary to both …
Who pays for carbon dioxide removal? Public perceptions of risk and fairness of enhanced rock weathering in the UK
Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is increasingly recognised as necessary to achieve net zero emissions. Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a novel CDR approach with large mitigation potential. With undefined social and environmental costs, and evolving economic and governance systems, ERW raises issues for public acceptance. A literature gap exists regarding how local communities view the possibility of at-scale deployment in their area. We address th…
Evaluating the effectiveness and acceptability of two positive body image media micro-interventions among children aged 4–6 years old – a study protocol

The infrastructural ecologies of industrial decarbonisation
Major changes to land and sea infrastructure are underway to achieve decarbonisation of energy generation and industrial processes. People who live and work locally alongside energy production and industrial sites will most intensely experience the transitions. There are growing calls within the environment and climate change fields, and aligned social justice and policy research, to address how such change risks producing inequalities from the e…
De-centring the human
This article focuses on embodiment and the centrality of embodied methods to multi-species research. We argue that taking the body as our methodological starting point is essential to researching human-animal relations but that bodies engage with and are engaged by the research process in a multiplicity of ways. In this we follow Vinciane Despret's analysis of the partial affinities between animal scientists' bodies and the animals they are resea…
Assessing the Specificity and Accuracy of Accent Judgments by Lay Listeners
Historically, there has been less research carried out on earwitness than eyewitness testimony. However, in some cases, earwitness evidence might play an important role in securing a conviction. This paper focuses on accent which is a central characteristic of voices in a forensic linguistic context. The paper focuses on two experiments (Experiment 1, n = 41; Experiment 2, n = 57) carried out with participants from a wide range of various locatio…
Imagine you are a Dog
Based upon a multi-species ethnography of companion dog training in the UK, this paper examines the training class as a site of inter-species communication through which dogs and their humans are mutually affected and transformed. We argue that dog training represents an important form of multi-species learning in which participants (human trainer, trainee and canine) shape one another, jointly if asymmetrically, through the performance of partic…
Dogs at Work
This chapter draws on research into the way dog training constructs the relationship between dog and human to explore how different organizational cultures shape dog-human working relationships. Using a gendered lens, it addresses the idea of partnership and how it develops through training in two contrasting organizational contexts in the UK: the police and an assistance dog charity. Both organizations recognize the importance of the dog-human p…
Improving body image at scale among Brazilian adolescents

Game on! A randomised controlled trial evaluation of playable technology in improving body satisfaction and negative affect among adolescents
Playables are mini-games used in digital advertising and may offer a novel and engaging avenue to improve young people’s well-being at scale. This randomised controlled trial evaluated the immediate impact and protective properties of a psychoeducational playable on adolescents’ body satisfaction and negative affect, and engagement in prosocial behaviours, relative to two active control conditions. Girls and boys aged 13–14 years ( N = 6575) were…
Becoming with a police dog
To develop and illustrate the potential for visual methodologies in conducting multispecies ethnography, we present a case study of general‐purpose police dog training in the UK. Our argument is two‐fold: first, we draw on STS approaches and insights for looking at training activities as material and socio‐cultural devices that, we argue, constitute a training technology. Here we have been influenced by the work of Cussins and adopted her concept…
Kinship across Species
This essay responds to Donna J. Haraway's (2016) provocation to 'stay with the trouble' of learning to live well with nonhumans as kin, through practice-based approaches to learning to care for nonhuman others. The cases examine the promotion of care for trees through mobile game apps for forest conservation, and kinship relations with city farm animals in Kentish Town, London. The cases are analysed with a view to how they articulate care practi…
El Centenario and Doña Hormiga
The Third Quintero Brother
For half a century now the fame of Don Serafin and Don Joaquin Alvarez Quintero has been world-wide. They are loved and respected, and their plays are known and enjoyed in both hemispheres. Little attention has been paid, however, to the literary merit of the eldest Quintero, Don Pedro, whom his brothers called paz y aliento de nuestras vidas (1). This gentle spirit was the greatest single influence in moulding the dramatic genius-and the charact…
