  • The Metrology of Stone Rows: A Reassessment

    Open Access•A Davis, A G Davis•ARTICLE•Glasgow Archaeological Journal•1986

A reappraisal is attempted of Alexander Thom's metrological hypotheses concerning the spacings of stones in the prehistoric stone rows in Britain (Thom 1978). After full consideration of the archaeological status of the sites, and the application of improved statistical techniques, aquantum identifiable with the megalithic yard emerges at probability levels very much lower than hitherto suspected. The suggestion by Kendall (1974) and others, that…

  • Pacing and the megalithic yard

    Open Access•A Davis, A G Davis•ARTICLE•Glasgow Archaeological Journal•1983

Simple pacing has often been suggested as an explanation of the ‘megalithic yard’. While such a hypothesis has the virtue of simplicity, evidence is presented here showing it to be inconsistent with actual stone circle data. By means of simulations, the pacing hypothesis is tested against the stone circle diameters given by Thom (1967), and may be rejected at a significance level of about 3%. Further simulations suggest that any satisfactory expl…

  • A spectroscopic study of the nimrud ivories

    Open Access•Gay Robins, G V ROBINS et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1983•Cited by: 4

  • Roles, Role Formats and Medical Encounters: Across-Cultural Analysis of Staff-Client Relationships in Children's Clinics

    Open Access•Philip Strong, P M Strong et al.•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•1977•Cited by: 3

The influence of variations of fiber direction on the distribution of stress and strain in the left ventricular wall was investigated using a finite element model to simulate the mechanics of the left ventricle. The commonly modelled helix fiber angle was defined as the angle between the local circumferential direction and the projection of the fiber path on the plane perpendicular to the local radial direction. In the present study, an additiona…

    Open Access•Alan Davis, A G Davis et al.•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•1974•References: 6

  • The Law of Defamation in New Zealand

    A G Davis•ARTICLE•University of Toronto Law Journal•1965

W HATEVER opinions may be voiced about the future of the British Commonwealth (or, to satisfy the questionings of some of its emergent members, the Commonwealth, simpliciter), New Zealand as one of its foundation members remains, to quote a popular phrase, British than Britain. So far as its legal system is concerned this statement is undoubtedly true; although, to avoid wounding the susceptibilities of the Scots, it is preferable to say, this co…
