New worlds of logistical labour
This Special Issue offers new research on the dynamic interaction and interdependence of global logistics with spaces of labour, including work, workers, organisations and workers’ communities. It presents ten articles that emphasise the changing nature of logistical labour in the context of radical technological transformation and changing spatial and social configurations. Spanning diverse geographical contexts across five continents, the colle…
The conscientious worker
Employer discourse is an under-researched element of scholarship on labour regimes, which has tended to dismiss employer views as self-serving or duplicitous. In response, this article argues that employer discourse should be taken more seriously as a response to real-world transformations in markets, supply chains, technologies and labour markets. Evidence is drawn from Australia’s largest cities, where experimentation with automation has led to…
Articulations of workplace precarity
As critical nodes for global commodity flows, warehouses are an important example of segmented labour regimes which partition workers into groups with different conditions of security or its opposite, precarity. An emerging literature on warehouse work has tended to place segmentation in the context of managerial despotism based upon low wages, high labour turnover and job insecurity. New Institutionalism
Over the last 40 years, new institutionalism has gradually emerged as an important subdiscipline of economics. This field of “transaction cost” economics offers elegant insights into the world of business and economic history and, in the last 20 years, has strongly influenced the study and practice of economic development. The tradition is underpinned by the simple insight that organizational hierarchies and institutions are crucial to the functi…
Political Economy
Political economy may be regarded as a subdiscipline of, as broadly related to, or as a “heterodox” critical alternative to mainstream economics. Perhaps surprisingly, political economy's role as an alternative to mainstream economics has not been significantly strengthened in recent years, despite the “great recession” casting doubt upon economists' traditional assumptions about market society. The entry explores this quandary by showing that po…
Labour Contractors and Global Production Networks
Research on labour in global production networks has raised serious questions about the role played by labour contractors. This article uses a case study of automotive components production in north India to show how labour contractors assist firms to adapt to the rigours of competition in supply chains. We demonstrate that a regional contract labour system has enabled employers to keep wages low, increase firm flexibility, offload the burden of …
Replication of Alcoholism Acceptance Scores as a Function of Treatment
The aim of this study was to collect additional data on validity in further standardizing the Bell Alcoholism Scale of Adjustment as an instrument to measure acceptance of the illness nature of alcoholism. The scale was administered to 215 patients at the beginning (Time 1) and at the end (Time 2) of their participation in an alcohol-and-drug treatment program. On admission, the mean score was 110, and at discharge 97, a statistically significant…
