  • Attitudes of millennials toward corporate responsibility: A 28-Society Multilevel Analysis

    Open Access•Jane Terpstra Tong, David A Ralston et al.•ARTICLE•Cross Cultural & Strategic…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Purpose We examined the attitudes of millennial-aged business students toward economic, social and environmental corporate responsibility (CR). Currently, these individuals are of an age that they have entered the workforce and are now ascending or have ascended into roles of leadership in which they have decision-making power that influences their company’s CR agenda and implementation. Thus, following the ecological systems perspective, we test…

  • The impact of gender-role-orientations on subjective career success: A multilevel study of 36 societies

    Open Access•Jane Terpstra-Tong, David A Ralston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Vocational Behavior•2022

  • Land-based financing in sub-Saharan African cities

Open Access•Stephen Berrisford, Liza Rose Cirolia et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Urbanization•2018•Cited by: 11•References: 1

Decentralization reforms and rapid urbanization place increasing pressure on African urban authorities. In response, land-based finance has been gaining popularity within development discourses as a method of increasing local autonomy and financing local government infrastructure provision. This paper discusses the conceptual basis for land-based finance, the instruments that form part of this approach, and the actual application in several Afric…

  • Occupational risk factors for ill health in Gulf veterans of the United Kingdom

Khalida Ismail, Nick Blatchley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2000•References: 21

OBJECTIVES: To study the association between occupational factors specific to the Armed Forces (rank, functional roles, Service, regular or reservist status and deployment factors) and symptomatic health problems in Gulf veterans, after sociodemographic and lifestyle factors have been accounted for. DESIGN: A postal cross sectional survey of randomly selected UK Gulf veterans was conducted six to seven years after the Gulf conflict. Physical ill …

  • Discourse as a Strategic Resource

    Open Access•C Hardy, Ian Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2000•Cited by: 82•References: 25

In this article, we outline a model of how discourse can be mobilized as a strategic resource. The model consists of three circuits. First, in circuits of activity, individuals attempt to introduce new discursive statements, through the use of symbols, narratives, metaphors, etc. aimed at evoking concepts to create particular objects. These activities must intersect with circuits of performativity. This occurs when, for example, concepts are cont…

  • Arts Managers and Managerialism: A Cross-Sector Analysis of CEOs' Orientations and Skills

    Ian Palmer•ARTICLE•Public Productivity & Management…•1998

  • Managerial accounts of downsizing

Open Access•Ian Palmer, Boris Kabanoff et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1997•References: 2

Downsizing remains a popular management technique for restructuring organizations. This is despite evidence that, by itself, downsizing often fails to deliver promised benefits and can result in a range of staff and other problems. Within the management literature some have responded by identifying ‘best practices’ in downsizing, whilst others have argued for downsizing to be used strategically, not just for cost reduction. The study reported in …

  • Arts management cutback strategies: A cross‐sector analysis

    Open Access•Ian Palmer•ARTICLE•Nonprofit Management and Leadership•1996

The turbulent economic climate of the arts in the 1990s raises the question of how arts managers are coping with this situation. Exploratory factor analysis of responses from 237 Australian arts managers in public, private nonprofit, and private for‐profit sectors revealed seven different strategic responses: cost reduction, political, cooperative, downsizing, refinancing, commercialization, and relocation. Private sector managers were more likel…

  • Images of regulation: Travel agent legislation and the deregulation debate

    Ian Palmer•ARTICLE•Politics•1989•Cited by: 1•References: 5

During the last two years travel agents have changed from being relatively unregulated (outside New South Wales) to regulated in terms of licensing and compensation fund membership requirements. Why has this happened during a period when political debate has centred on deregulation? It is a premise of this paper that arguments in favour of deregulation rest on an image of the State as a prison for private entre‐preneurship; and arguments in favou…

  • State Theory and Statutory Authorities: Points of Convergence

    Open Access•Ian Palmer•ARTICLE•Sociology•1985•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This paper argues for an institutional approach to state analyses. It notes that in general the Marxist literature on the state has paid little attention to the different types of state administration (departments, statutory authorities), and the effect of administrative forms on the ability of state agencies to conduct activities, or engage in struggles within the state. By contrast, there is an extensive and insightful body of writings to be fo…
