Open Access•Black Hawk Hancock, Roberta Garner•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•2015•References: 13

A dialectical reading of Goffman and Freud connects the Interaction Order to the psychoanalytic conception of the self and thereby open up new possibilities of interpretation and transformation. Goffman’s concept of the Interaction Order enables us to understand more clearly the Freudian concepts of superego, ego-ideal, and the introjected Father. Next, we draw out the dramaturgical approach of both Goffman and Freud in terms of performing self a…

Open Access•Black Hawk Hancock, Roberta Garner•ARTICLE•History of the Human Sciences•2014•References: 6

The recent publication of the translation of Jacques Derrida’s Athens, Still Remains, a small volume of photographs and commentary, affords an opportunity to probe Derrida’s reflections on death and therefore on life as well. Looking at photographs and objects of everyday life, Derrida emphasizes the deferred yet certain nature of death and the way in which this deferral opens the opportunity to devote ourselves to life. His grounding of his phil…

    Roberta Garner•ARTICLE•Sociological Theory•1990•Cited by: 1
