  • Tory Travails and Collegiate Confusion

    Open Access•Nigel Aston•ARTICLE•Parliamentary History•2024

In terms of the unreformed franchise operative in the early 18th century, the University of Oxford made up an unusual parliamentary constituency. Here it was the votes of non‐resident members that could be decisive to the outcome if the seat was contested. In late Stuart and early Hanoverian Oxford, Tories were almost certain to be returned but, in the general election of 1722, the Tory vote was split between rival candidates offering a possible …

  • Hanoverian Oxford and the Fashioning of John Wesley, c .1720–1745

    Nigel Aston•ARTICLE•Wesley and Methodist Studies•2023

This article is an attempt at recovering the Oxford contexts of John Wesley’s young manhood, charting his milieu more exactly in the light of the most recent scholarship, and, in so doing, moving away from the outworn depiction of the virtuous and misunderstood young Wesley in a university setting largely deficient in its Christian practices. It argues that Oxford’s unsuccessful relationship and persistent ambivalence toward the mature John Wesle…

  • Thomas Townson and High Church Continuities and Connections in Eighteenth-Century England

Nigel Aston•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the John Rylands…•2021

This article focuses on the career and writings of a neglected eighteenth-century High Church cleric, Thomas Townson (1715–92). It aims to restate his contemporary prominence as a writer and pastor and present fresh research into the intergenerational transmission and reception of High Church ideas and practices within a distinctive religio-political milieu in Staffordshire and Cheshire. In this recovery of contexts, it notes Townson’s relatively…

  • John Brooke and the Namierite Succession

    Open Access•Nigel Aston•ARTICLE•Parliamentary History•2021

Without John Brooke, the first volumes of the History of Parliament for the house of commons covering the years 1754–90 might either have appeared much later than they did in 1964 (a mere four years after Sir Lewis Namier's death) or they might never have appeared at all. It was a token of how much Brooke willingly played the role of Namier's principal lieutenant during the latter's lifetime and his qualified loyalty continued for the remainder o…

  • Francophilia and Political Failure

    Open Access•Nigel Aston•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2017•Cited by: 1

This article draws attention to William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne’s (1737–1805) capacity for fostering a culture of mutual respect and constructive interaction in Anglo-French relations that had no contemporary equivalent, and explores his contacts with the French political world before the Revolution. For someone who was usually lambasted for sophistry and inconsistency, his career-long commitment to Anglo-French cordiality over three decades…

  • Irish or English? The Rise and Rise of John Fitzmaurice Petty in the 1750s

    Nigel Aston•ARTICLE•Eighteenth-Century Life•2015

The ascent of John Fitzmaurice is a study in the processes of Anglo-Irish integration and socialization in aristocratic circles in eighteenth-century London, a subject area that awaits systematic investigation: his is less a story of rags to riches than of a resourceful Irishman from a family of Anglo-Norman pedigree repositioning himself in London society to take maximum advantage of an extraordinary piece of good fortune. He was so successful i…

    Nigel Aston•ARTICLE•French History•2012

Sainthood and Enlightenment have not been conventionally associated. Eric Suire’s important book comprehensively displaces that disjuncture. His is an exhaustive study that learnedly covers every conceivable aspect of sainthood in eighteenth-century France; it is rich in statistics throughout, with careful consideration and classification of sources. The keynote theme is one of evolution, not disappearance, for Saints were still ubiquitous. They …

  • The D’Éprémesnil of the Clergy’

    Nigel Aston•ARTICLE•French History•2005

Lauzières de Thémines, Bishop of Blois, is one of the overlooked leaders of resistance to royal policies in the ‘pre-revolution’ of 1787–9, masterminding the opposition of the First Estate in the General Assembly of the Clergy of 1788 and in his own anonymous publications. Thémines’ own uncomfortable relations with the lower clergy of the Blois diocese gave him no chance of election as a representative of the First Estate in the Estates-General a…

Publication of An essay on spirit in 1750 was, on the face of it, no particular landmark in the history of heterodoxy. There had been arguments in Anglican circles since the 1680s about ‘mystery’ and the Holy Trinity, all part of the assault on fundamental articles of belief waged by such critics as John Toland and Anthony Collins after the Revolution Settlement, a time when interest in Arian ideas was reviving among Isaac Newton's followers, par…

  • Survival Against the Odds? The French Bishops Elected to the Estates-General, 1789

    Open Access•Nigel Aston•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•1989•References: 9

The general view still prevails that the French bishops performed badly in the elections held to the estates-general in the spring of 1789. The final figure of only 49 bishops going to Versailles amid a horde of curés tends to be treated by historians as a clear demonstration of the new power of the lower clergy, confirming the view of the episcopal corps as aristocratic, out of touch, and unprepared for an electoral contest on a level of equalit…

  • The End of an Élite

Nigel Aston•BOOK•The end of an élite•1992

This is the first scholarly study in English of the bishops of the French Church at the outbreak of the French Revolution. The 130 members of the episcopate formed an elite within an elite, the First Estate of the kingdom. Much has been written in recent years about the late eighteenth-century French nobility, but the high political picture remains incomplete without taking the bishops into account. This book is designed to correct the imbalance.…

Ranging across Europe (with a particular emphasis on France and Britain), readers will find essays which survey individual responses to crises in the religious life of the state, discuss contacts between communions, note changing patterns of…
