  • Situated Attention, Agency, and Self-Integration

    Open Access•Lawrence Berger•ARTICLE•Human Studies•2026

I argue that attention is always placed in the lived body-environment as the locus of control of bodily resources, which are activated, oriented, and made manifest as centered in joint engagement there. Since these resources are constitutive of our possibilities for being in the world, it follows that attention is how the self is made manifest in relation to and in engagement with other entities. I also argue that while attention itself is typica…

  • Beyond the attention economy, towards an ecology of attending. A manifesto

    Open Access•Gunter Bombaerts, Tom Hannes et al.•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2026

We endorse policymakers’ efforts to address the negative consequences of the attention economy’s technology but add that these approaches are often limited in their criticism of the systemic context of human attention. Starting from Buddhist philosophy, we advocate a broader approach: an ‘ecology of attending’ that centers on conceptualizing, designing, and using attention (1) in an embedded way and (2) focused on the alleviating of suffering. Wi…

    Open Access•Jessica Pac, Sophie Collyer et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•2023•Cited by: 9•References: 4

In this study, we use microsimulation methods to estimate the reduction in child protective services (CPS) involvement resulting from implementation of three of the policy packages from a recent National Academy of Sciences proposal to reduce child poverty, including the introduction of a child allowance and expansions to the earned income tax credit, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and the federal minimum wage. We find that the po…

  • The Effects of Opioid Use during Pregnancy on Infant Health and Well-Being

Open Access•Jessica Pac, Christine Piette Durrance et al.•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2022•References: 40

We estimate the causal effects of infants’ exposure to opioids in utero on their health at birth and on the likelihood that their parents will be the subjects of subsequent reports to child protective services. We use administrative data on 259,723 infants born to 176,224 mothers enrolled in Medicaid between 2010 and 2019. Results suggest that an infant experiencing withdrawal symptoms after birth or needing admission to intensive care is strongl…

  • Is Student Loan Debt Discouraging Homeownership among Young Adults

    Jason N Houle, Lawrence M Berger et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•2015•Cited by: 20•References: 2

Amid concern that rising student loan debt has social and economic consequences for young adults, many suggest that student loan debt is leading young adults to forgo home buying. However, there is little empirical evidence on this topic. In this study, we use data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 to estimate associations of student loan debt with homeownership, mortgage amount, and home equity. We use a variety of methodologic…
