  • Resilience of Indigenous communities in Alaska by 1940

    Open Access•Ann M Carlos, Catherine Massey•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2025•Referências: 14

This article describes household activity in 13 Indigenous communities in Alaska around 1940. Alaska is too often ignored in discussions of Indigenous economic development. Our focus contributes to a greater understanding of economic development among Indigenous communities in the region and provides an important counterpoint to Indigenous economies in the contiguous United States where agency was more limited. Certainly in 1940, Alaskan Indigeno…

  • Do Grandparents Matter? Multigenerational Mobility in the United States, 1940–2015

Joseph Ferrie, Joseph P Ferrie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2021

We assess the biases induced by measurement error in a study of correlations in educational attainment across two and three generations in the United States using linked data spanning 1940–2015. Although multigenerational regressions show an economically meaningful “grandparent effect,” we find that this effect is overstated and likely not statistically or economically significant after we correct for measurement error. However, that same measure…

  • How Well Do Automated Linking Methods Perform? Lessons from US Historical Data

Martha J Bailey, Martha Bailey et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Literature•2020

This paper reviews the literature in historical record linkage in the United States and examines the performance of widely used record-linking algorithms and common variations in their assumptions. We use two high-quality, hand-linked data sets and one synthetic ground truth to examine the direct effects of linking algorithms on data quality. We find that (i) no algorithm (including hand linking) consistently produces representative samples; (ii)…

  • Long-term decline in intergenerational mobility in the United States since the 1850s

Open Access•Xi Song, Catherine Massey et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2020

We make use of newly available data that include roughly 5 million linked household and population records from 1850 to 2015 to document long-term trends in intergenerational social mobility in the United States. Intergenerational mobility declined substantially over the past 150 y, but more slowly than previously thought. Intergenerational occupational rank–rank correlations increased from less than 0.17 to as high as 0.32, but most of this chan…

  • Simple strategies for improving inference with linked data

Martha Bailey, Connor Cole et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2020•Citada por: 16•Referências: 27

New large-scale linked data are revolutionizing quantitative history and demography. This paper proposes two complementary strategies for improving inference with linked historical data: the use of validation variables to identify higher quality links and a simple, regression-based weighting procedure to increase the representativeness of custom research samples. We demonstrate the potential value of these strategies using the 1850-1930 Integrate…

  • The Great Migration and Residential Segregation in American Cities during the Twentieth Century

    Open Access•C Leibbrand, Catherine Massey et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 82

The Great Migration from the South and the rise of racial residential segregation strongly shaped the twentieth-century experience of African Americans. Yet, little attention has been devoted to how the two phenomena were linked, especially with respect to the individual experiences of the migrants. We address this gap by using novel data that links individual records from the complete-count 1940 Census to those in the 2000 Census long form, in c…

  • Neighborhood Attainment Outcomes for Children of the Great Migration

    C Leibbrand, Catherine Massey et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•2019•Citada por: 4•Referências: 83

Between 1915 and 1970, millions of black and white southerners migrated north in search of better lives for themselves and their children. Using novel, longitudinally linked 1940 and 2000 census data, we investigate whether this mass migration corresponded to improved neighborhood attainment outcomes for the black and white children of Great Migration migrants in their adulthood. We find that black and white second-generation migrants tend to liv…

  • Great Migration's great return? An examination of second-generation return migration to the South

  • Linking the 1940 U.S. Census with modern data

    Catherine Massey, Catherine G Massey et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2018•Citada por: 8•Referências: 13

The U.S. Census Bureau has created a set of linkable census, survey, and administrative records that provides longitudinal data on the American population across the past eight decades. While these files include modern decennial censuses, Census Bureau surveys, and administrative records files from other federal agencies, the long time span is only possible with the addition of the complete count 1940 Census microdata. In this paper, we discuss t…

  • Playing with matches

    Catherine Massey, Catherine G Massey•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2017•Citada por: 10•Referências: 36

This article evaluates linkage quality achieved by various record linkage techniques used in historical demography. The author creates benchmark, or truth, data by linking the 2005 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Social Security Administration's numeric identification system by social security number. By comparing simulated linkages to the benchmark data, she examines the value added (in terms of number and …

  • Second-Generation Outcomes of the Great Migration

    Open Access•J Trent Alexander, C Leibbrand et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2017•Citada por: 9•Referências: 54

The mass migration of African Americans out of the South during the first two-thirds of the twentieth century represents one of the most significant internal migration flows in U.S. history. Those undertaking the Great Migration left the South in search of a better life, and their move transformed the cultural, social, and political dynamics of African American life specifically and U.S. society more generally. Recent research offers conflicting …

Since Alan Krueger's christening of the Great Gatsby curve, there has been increased attention given to the relationship between inequality and intergenerational social mobility in the United States. Studying intergenerational mobility (IGM) requires longitudinal data across large spans of time as well as the ability to follow parents and children over multiple generations. Few longitudinal datasets meet this need. This article surveys available …
