Lean diabetes: 20-Year trends in its prevalence and clinical features among Korean adults
The prevalence of lean type 2 diabetes among Korean adults is increasing, at a rate similar to type 2 diabetes in overweight/obese individuals. Patients with lean type 2 diabetes showed decreased beta-cell function and sarcopenia. These findings emphasize the need for tailored management strategies for lean type 2 diabetes given its characteristics and rising prevalence
Network Brokerage and Self-Rated Popularity Among Lao School-Based Children: Findings From Primary Survey Data
This study examines whether and how an individual's subjective, or self-rated, popularity is related to one's structural position in the peer network, as measured by betweenness centrality and structural hole measure. Data were drawn from the original fieldwork conducted in Laos ( N = 1,490; boys = 40%; Mage = 13), a low-income country in Southeast Asia. Using friendship nominations, we constructed a global network matrix based on which sociometr…
Potential effectiveness of digital therapeutics specialized in executive functions as adjunctive treatment for clinical symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A feasibility study
According to caregivers, the findings indicate that DTx holds potential effect as an adjunctive treatment in children with ADHD, especially in subjective clinical symptoms. Future studies will require detailed development and application targeting specific clinical domains using DTx with sufficient sample sizes. Clinical trial registration : KCT0007579
The long-run causal effects of single-sex schooling on work-related outcomes in South Korea
Perceived economic security, relative gratification , and xenophobic sentiment during the Trump administration
The bulk of prior research focuses on economic hard times as a source of material insecurity and relative deprivation in fueling negative attitudes toward immigrants and immigration. The present study shifts the focus to a novel concept: relative gratification. During the height of Trump administration, the American economy enjoyed unprecedented growth and stability. Yet, as our study shows, anti-immigrant sentiment became more pronounced among U…
The Experiences of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners with Clinical Supervision in South Korea: A Grounded Theory Approach
Clinical supervision (CS) helps improve expertise and job satisfaction in nursing staff, but its grounded research is limited. This study was conducted to derive a grounded theory based on the lived experiences of psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) in clinical supervision. Data were collected from January to April 2018 through in-depth unstructured interviews with 19 PMHMPs. Supervision of mental health nurses was necessary be…

University students’ perceptions of airborne infection control: Exploratory study using Q methodology
The major contribution of this study is to clarify university students' perceptions of airborne infection. These findings can be used in formulating effective strategies for health education, media reporting, and public health policy to improve airborne infection management
National pride, social trust, and cultural nativism: Findings from East and Southeast Asia
Anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive activities of Alpinia Oxyphylla Miquel extracts in animal models
Understanding economic and cultural underpinnings of anti-immigrant attitudes: Multilevel evidence from the Asian Barometer Survey Wave IV (2014–2016)
A large body of research exists concerning determinants of public opinion on immigration and immigrants, primarily based on Western countries. Given that South–South migratory flows have increased dramatically in recent decades, we contribute to the literature by analyzing cross-national probability data in the Asian context. Using multilevel modeling, we derive and test economic and cultural hypotheses concerning natives’ support for restrictive…
Cultivating a Good Life in Early Chinese and Ancient Greek Philosophy: Perspectives and Reverberations
This book engages in cross-tradition scholarship, investigating the processes associated with cultivating or nurturing the self in order to live good lives. Both Ancient Chinese and Greek philosophers provide accounts of the life lived well: a Confucian junzi, a Daoist sage and a Greek phronimos. By focusing on the processes rather than the aims of cultivating a good life, an international team of scholars investigate how a person develops and pr…
Exploring the Association between Suicidality and Smoking Behavior among School-Based Children in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR)
This study examines the relationship between suicidality and smoking behavior. Specifically, it examines how and the degree to which suicide ideation and plan are associated with the probability of being a regular smoker among school-based children. Data come from Lao Student Health Survey (2017), a project funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea. Using primary hierarchically nested data (students clustered in classrooms across school…
Eurasian Empires in Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages: Contact and Exchange Between the Graeco-Roman World, Inner Asia and China
The Political Organization of Steppe Empires and their Contribution to Eurasian Interconnectivity: The Case of the Huns and Their Impact on the Frankish West
A comparative and interdisciplinary study of ancient and medieval Eurasian empires using historical, philological and archaeological evidence.
The Huns
This volume is a concise introduction to the history and culture of the Huns. This ancient people had a famous reputation in Eurasian Late Antiquity. However, their history has often been evaluated as a footnote in the histories of the later Roman Empire and early Germanic peoples. Kim addresses this imbalance and challenges the commonly held assumption that the Huns were a savage people who contributed little to world history, examining striking…
Is My Rival's Rival a Friend? Popular Third-Party Perceptions of Territorial Disputes in East Asia
This article examines how China's rise and increasing tensions with Japan are portrayed by South Korean bloggers. The deterioration in relations between China and Japan over the last two years generally projects onto the ways and means by which China's rise is portrayed in South Korea. Since Korea's relations with both its more populous neighbours have been historically fraught, and since it is also implicated in various territorial disputes with…
The Huns, Rome and the Birth of Europe
The Huns have often been treated as primitive barbarians with no advanced political organisation. Their place of origin was the so-called 'backward steppe'. It has been argued that whatever political organisation they achieved they owed to the 'civilizing influence' of the Germanic peoples they encountered as they moved west. This book argues that the steppes of Inner Asia were far from 'backward' and that the image of the primitive Huns is vastl…
Politics of Race in East Asia: The Case of Korea and the Chinese community in South Korea
The influx of Chinese into Korea has a long history. The earlier migrants were rapidly absorbed into mainstream Korean society and quickly assimilated. However, the Chinese migrants who arrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the huaqiao, chose to maintain their separate, non-Korean identity. This later led to open discrimination towards the huaqiao in post-independence Korea. The adoption of modern nationalism and racial theories in K…
Why Coins Turned Round the World Over? A Critical Analysis of the Origins and Transmission of Ancient Metallic Money
The inspiration behind the pre-modern bronze round coinage standardised across China by the First Emperor of Qin in the 3rd century BC have remained fairly obscure and are still a contentious issue. We demonstrate in this article that the various theories arguing for an exclusively endogenous impetus behind the spread and development of Chinese round coinage vouched for by many scholars in either East Asia or the West all carry inherent contradic…
Feasibility of CD147 for an Eruption-Related Molecule during Rat Molar Development
Understanding the genetic control of tooth eruption is one of the major issues in tooth development. Thus far, it is known that eruption-related molecules are secreted from follicular cells surrounding the germs and are related mainly to osteoclast formation. This study examined the involvement of CD147 and its downstream molecules in the eruption of rat developing molars using immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR and histomorphometry. CD147 was expresse…
Effects of Chorda-lingual Denervation on NOS Expression in the Rat Submandibular Gland
Nitric oxide (NO) gas has been recognized to diffuse readily across the membrane and bind directly to molecule (s) inside target cells. In the salivary gland, eNOS and nNOS are constitutively expressed. iNOS was also reported to express in neoplastic salivary tissues. Regarding the role of NO in the salivary gland, it has been suggested that it may control blood flow to the glands and furthermore involve in growth and development of the gland. Th…
Bisphosphonate and the Eruption of Developing Teeth: Its Effects and Mechanism
Bisphosphonates have similar chemical structures to endogenous inorganic pyrophosphate which inhibits mineral deposition in biological tissues. Even though their clinical applications have been attempted, their molecular mechanism and cellular effects on dental hard tissue development remain to be elucidated. The present study was performed to investigate their effects on the development of the tooth and their mode of action. Alendronate, a synth…
