Force or Fraud
Seduction was a ubiquitous theme in the literature of late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England. The period’s drama, ballads, and poetry are full of men trying to entice women into illicit sex, and of detailed explorations of the consequences. In this fine book, Toni Bowers explores the prevalence of the subject in the fictional prose of four writers whom she sees as sharing a loosely defined ‘tory sensibility’: Aphra Behn, Delarivier Manl…
The origins of sex
In The Origins of Sex, Faramerz Dabhoiwala provides a landmark history, one that will revolutionize our understanding of the origins of sexuality in modern Western culture. For millennia, sex had been strictly regulated by the Church, the state, and society, who vigorously and brutally attempted to punish any sex outside of marriage. But by 1800, everything had changed. Drawing on vast research--from canon law to court cases, from novels to porno…
Carnal Commerce in Counter-Reformation Rome
Elizabethan and Jacobean English men and women were fascinated by Italian courtesans. It is easy to see why. The Catholic Church's acceptance of prostitution had been a central target of Reformation polemic. To Protestants it epitomised the sinfulness and corruption of the papacy, that great modern Whore of Babylon. Ending it was therefore vital to the establishment of a new moral and religious order. From the 1520s onwards, in reformed cities an…

Gentility and the Comic Theatre of Late Stuart London
This is a study of comedies produced on the London stage between 1690 and 1725. Its aim is to use these, together with ancillary evidence from diaries, periodicals, and popular print, to shed light on contemporary notions of gentility. The book falls into four parts. The first considers why the cuckolded citizen was such a favourite stock character. It suggests this was because the social position of wealthy merchants and financiers was anomalous…
Summary Justice in Early Modern London
The purpose of this note is to elucidate the character and extent of summary jurisdiction in the City of London in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Summary justice, exercised by justices of the peace acting alone or in concert, was the simplest type of law in early modern England. During this period there was a notable expansion of its use against petty crime and social disorder. This trend was especially marked in London, the most polit…
The Construction of Honour, Reputation and Status in Late Seventeenth- and Early Eighteenth-Century England
Notions of honour and reputation were ubiquitous and important in early modern England for a variety of reasons. They were part and parcel of how individuals in this society conceived of the relationship between the personal and the public, and between the projection and the perception of one's character. More particularly, they lay at the heart of two crucial issues: how people thought about social status, and about the differences between men a…
