  • Public attitude toward solar radiation modification: Results of a two-scenario online survey on perception in four Asia–Pacific countries

    Open Access•M Sugiyama, Shinichiro Asayama et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Solar geoengineering or solar radiation modification (SRM) is increasingly looming large as a potential response to human-induced climate change. However, it is deeply mired in controversies surrounding environmental risks and social governance challenges. Given the high stakes and uncertain characteristics of SRM, it is essential to understand public perception. However, previous studies on public perception have not explicitly utilized scenario…

  • Impact of the GeoMIP G1 sunshade geoengineering experiment on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation

Open Access•Yu Hong, John C Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

We analyze the multi-earth system model responses of ocean temperatures and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) under an idealized solar radiation management scenario (G1) from the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project. All models simulate warming of the northern North Atlantic relative to no geoengineering, despite geoengineering substantially offsetting the increases in mean global ocean temperatures. Increases in the …

  • Transdisciplinary co-design of scientific research agendas: 40 Research Questions for Socially Relevant Climate Engineering Research

    Open Access•M Sugiyama, Shinichiro Asayama et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 17

  • Technology Shocks and the Great Depression

    Open Access•Shingo Watanabe•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 34

Standard productivity measures indicate large fluctuations in technology during the Great Depression. This article's historical technology series (1892-1966), controlled for aggregation effects, varying input utilization, non-constant returns, and imperfect competition, does not indicate technology regress such that could trigger the downturn. In contrast, technology improvements in the recovery were so rapid that, over the whole Great Depression…

  • Examination of a climate stabilization pathway via zero-emissions using Earth system models

Open Access•Daisuke Nohara, Junichi Tsutsui et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

Long-term climate experiments up to the year 2300 have been conducted using two full-scale complex Earth system models (ESMs), CESM1(BGC) and MIROC-ESM, for a CO _2 emissions reduction pathway, termed Z650, where annual CO _2 emissions peak at 11 PgC in 2020, decline by 50% every 30 years, and reach zero in 2160. The results have been examined by focusing on the approximate linear relationship between the temperature increase and cumulative CO _2…

  • A multi-model assessment of regional climate disparities caused by solar geoengineering

Open Access•Ben Kravitz, Douglas G MacMartin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2014

Global-scale solar geoengineering is the deliberate modification of the climate system to offset some amount of anthropogenic climate change by reducing the amount of incident solar radiation at the surface. These changes to the planetary energy budget result in differential regional climate effects. For the first time, we quantitatively evaluate the potential for regional disparities in a multi-model context using results from a model experiment…
