  • Analyzing Trends in Material Culture Evolution—a Case Study of Gravettian Points from Lower Austria and Moravia

    Open Access•Andreas Maier, R A JOHN et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 25

Identifying, analyzing, and explaining trends in the development of material culture is one of the major concerns in prehistoric archaeology. The traditional recording of data in typologies, however, is not optimal for answering the question of diachronic change because typological data capture variability poorly and are often incompatible with multivariate statistics. To overcome these problems, we present PyREnArA (Python-R-Environment for Arti…

  • The MIS 3/2 transition in a new loess profile at Krems-Wachtberg East – A multi-methodological approach

    Open Access•Simon Meyer-Heintze, Tobias Sprafke et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

Local to regional paleoenvironmental reactions to past climate changes are preserved in loess-paleosol sequences (LPS). In order to extract this information we used a multi-methodological approach in the Upper Paleolithic site of Krems-Wachtberg East in Lower Austria. Detailed field studies and high-resolution geochemical, colorimetric, and granulometric analyses help to understand the interplay between soil formation, loess accumulation, and sur…

In the course of new excavations at the Upper Paleolithic site at Krems-Wachtberg in the loess region near Krems, Lower Austria, a double burial of newborns was discovered in 2005. One year later, a single grave of an infant was excavated nearby. Both graves are associated with the well-preserved living floor of an Upper Paleolithic hunter-gatherer camp with distinct archaeological features and a rich Gravettian find assemblage. Several charcoal …

  • Tragic Heroes

    Open Access•Udo Simon, Ulrich Simon•CHAPTER•Pity and Terror•1989

Mighty men of heroic stature lie behind the Christian tradition, as any inspection of our great cathedrals will demonstrate. Patriarchs, Moses, judges, kings, and prophets pair evangelists, apostles, martyrs, missionaries, rulers. Not all of them suffer or die violently, but their merit is generally weighed in terms of sacrifice, of self-transcendence, of submission to the divine will. The iconography and the sculptures commemorate these figures,…
