Family Gerontology, Fatherhood, and Masculinity
Despite the intertwined nature of aging, fatherhood, and masculinities, research rarely integrates these perspectives to understand fathers' relationships with their adult children. This review brings these disciplines together, encompassing 15 years of scholarship (2009–2023) in family gerontology and examining articles on fathering adult children ( n = 4 articles) and articles that included mothers and fathers to extrapolate the findings for fa…
The Who, Why, Where, and How of Moving into Assisted Living
The aim of this study is to understand older adult decision-making processes and feelings regarding moving into assisted living facilities. Residents of assisted living facilities in Southern California (n = 46) were interviewed about why they moved, who was involved in the process, what factors they considered, and how they feel about their decision. Participants reported that changes in health, desire for social support, and anticipation for fu…

This coproduced study drew on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to inform a Human Rights-based design. Using photographic images and reflective diaries, twelve participant co-researchers investigated the quality of public toilets when travelling in Scotland for people with dementia and other physical and cognitive impairments. Data were analysed using constant comparison and critically reflexive, group enqui…

Needs and needs assessment
The concept of need and the practice of needs assessment are both subject to a wide range of interpretations, to the likely detriment of individual assessments and to multidisciplinary working. Clear definition is important for individual assessment, for the development of multidisciplinary tools and in gathering planning information. The concept of need is clarified, firstly by distinguishing between need and the difficulties that engender it, a…
Social work and people with dementia
Current community care policies and increasing numbers of older people needing assistance mean that all social workers must be up-to-date in their knowledge, skills and attitudes towards people with dementia and their carers. This book, written by experienced social workers, provides guidance on best practice in a readable and jargon-free style.
Social work and people with dementia, second edition
Jesus
The basic premise is that Jesus had a reputation for arriving at meals uninvited, thus provoking the accusations cited in Lk. 7.34 and Mt. 11.19. His table fellowship with toll collectors and sinners is viewed in light of ancient hospitality traditions, and with reference to Lk. 15.1-2; Mk 2.14-17; Lk. 19.1-10; and Lk. 6.27-36. It is argued that true hospitality involves welcoming outsiders, and that the toll collectors’ hospitality to Jesus demo…
