  • The Clinical Effectiveness of Prayer as an Intervention

    Mark Newitt•ARTICLE•Modern Believing•2022

This article reflects on prayer and health and attempts to study the relationship between them. I start by looking at definitions, particularly thinking about how health might best be understood. From that I move to explore clinical trials of intercessory prayers as an intervention to aid recovery. That leads me to look at prayer in relation to health and wellbeing more generally. • Healthcare Chaplains Among the Virtues

    Mark Newitt•ARTICLE•Practical Theology•2016

Noting that the bearing and presence of a chaplain in being with bereaved parents is as important as the provision of liturgy and ritual, this article argues that chaplaincy would benefit from an engagement with virtue ethics. The article begins by suggesting that many of the situations a chaplain encounters are too complex for principle based ethical approaches and outlines the merit of a “virtue-based” approach. As part of this the concept of a…

  • New directions in hospital chaplaincy: Chaplains - the Church's embedded apologists

    Open Access•Mark Newitt•ARTICLE•Theology•2014

Research and anecdotal evidence suggest that the relationship between healthcare chaplains and the Church is characterized by a deep sense of alienation in one direction and profound mistrust in the other. This is due, in part, to a lack of understanding about the work of chaplains. Recognizing a need for chaplains to explain their work, this article begins by describing research that investigated the support chaplains provided to bereaved parent…

  • The Role and Skills of a Hospital Chaplain: Reflections Based on a Case Study

    Mark Newitt•ARTICLE•Practical Theology•2010

Patients in hospital can face some of the most profound human experiences, as much of their understanding of themselves, and their outlook on life, are challenged. Drawing on a case study, this article explores the role of and skills required by hospital chaplains in providing spiritual care to a new generation of patients who do not belong to and/or believe in a particular faith tradition. Through listening and building relationships of trust, o…
