Ekphrasis in Disneyland: The Alice in Wonderland Ride (1958)
The Alice in Wonderland ride in Disneyland, which opened in 1958, was designed to place visitors inside the action, as if seeing things through Alice’s eyes. It drew on the film and on concept artwork, as well as the Lewis Carroll book; and can be seen as a transmedial work, which utilised a complex set of media elements. It can also be considered ekphrastic, in the way it referred to source media texts, but elaborated on them, and repurposed the…
Great Decisions, the Foreign Policy Association, and the Triumph of Elitism in the U.S. Foreign Policy Community
Who decides the national interest in a mass democracy? This article combines international, political, and intellectual history to demonstrate that a significant theoretical and practical debate about the relative power of experts and publics continued within the U.S. foreign policy community well into the Cold War. Arguing that ‘public opinion’ and related concepts should be treated as constructions rather than innate realities, it uses the hist…

Basingstoke and Its Archaeology
Excavations at Basing Grange, Basing House, Hampshire, 1999–2006
This report describes excavations at Basing Grange, Basing House, Hampshire, between 1999 and 2006. It embraces the 'Time Team' investigations in Grange Field, adjacent to the Great Barn, which were superseded and amplified by the work of the Basingstoke Archaeological & Historical Society, supervised by David Allen. This revealed the foundations of a 'hunting lodge' or mansion built in the 1670s and demolished, and effectively 'lost', in the mid…
A town called Celebration
The town of Celebration, Florida, is built in a neo-traditional style. The residents have been dismissed as people choosing to live in a form of ‘theme park’ world. Jean Baudrillard argued that in the age of the hyperreal, there is a frantic overproduction and proliferation of signs of the ‘real’, in order to ‘persuade us of the reality of the social’. On the surface, Celebration may seem to epitomize this phenomenon; but in fact, the town does n…
Realism and Malarkey: Henry Kissinger's State Department, Détente, and Domestic Consensus
This article uses recently declassified archival documents to reassess public opinion in the United States regarding East-West détente. When Henry Kissinger was U.S. secretary of state during the Nixon and Ford administrations, he made dozens of speeches intended to educate the public in what he considered the proper methods of diplomacy. By analyzing those “heartland” speeches using recently released documents, the article shows that Kissinger a…

Disneyland: Another kind of reality
The Disney park is usually condemned as a kind of Platonic cave of illusions, where visitors are so mesmerized by the verisimilitude of the displays that they begin to take it for ‘reality’. However, the park does not so much simulate the ‘real’ as celebrate the art of simulation, the ability to construct fantasy worlds as if they are ‘real’. Main Street USA was designed to evoke the ‘excitement of a dawning century of new technology’. This theme…

Seeing double: Disney's Wilderness Lodge
Wilderness Lodge is a hotel in Walt Disney World. It is a simulation of a historic national park lodge (based, in particular, on Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone). The hotel has been attacked as a 'simulacrum', which turns nature into a spectacle for our consumption. In their detailed analysis of the lodge, Eric Higgs and Jennifer Cypher condemn it as a copy with no 'true origin', a bricolage, which cobbles together elements from different sources…

Deuteronomy and exhortation in Hebrews: A Study in Narrative Re-Presentation
David M. Allen examines the way in which Deuteronomy operates within the paraenetic sections of Hebrews, both at a micro-level (in terms of citation or allusion to the prior text) and at a macro-level (how broad Deuteronomic themes are treated within the discourse). There is extensive treatment of Deuteronomic quotations and echoes, particularly from the Song of Moses (Deut 32), as well as analysis of Hebrews' borrowing of Deuteronomy's covenanta…
Revival – A Classic Pentecostal View
1Beginning with the primitive Christian community – arguably a revival of the faith of Israel in its final and finest form – and using the experience of the earliest believers as a benchmark by which to judge and evaluate subsequent moves of the Spirit, this article surveys such ‘times of refreshing’ from the first to the twentieth century, concluding with comment on the links between the Welsh Revival and emergent Pentecostals.2Edited version of…
Sport and the European Union: Foreword
Whilst academics have researched the relationship between sport and politics and sport and international relations for some time now, sport as a focus of interest to scholars of European integration is a more recent phenomenon. Research was most obviously stimulated by the far reaching consequences of the Bosman judgement (1995) that related to the free movement between two EU member states of a footballer out of contract with his club. Although …

HIV infection in intravenous drug users entering drug treatment, United States, 1988 to 1989. The Field Services Branch of the Centers for Disease Control

The Excavation of a Beaker Burial Monument at Ravenstone, Buckinghamshire, in 1978
This paper records the excavation of a ploughed-out round barrow (ring-ditch) at Ravenstone, Buckinghamshire (SP 8535 4895). The circular ditch (12.0 m diameter) was broken by four narrow causeways. Two graves were located at the centre of the monument. The primary grave was apparently a cenotaph, for although a coffin, an antler spatula and a flint fabricator were discovered, no skeletal material was found. The secondary grave contained the crou…
Excavations at Hafod y Nant Criafolen, Brenig Valley, Clwyd, 1973-74
This paper records the excavation of a hafod settlement (the summer base of a transhumance circuit), as part of a large programme of work undertaken in advance of the construction of the Brenig Valley reservoir, Clwyd. (SH 985 574). The settlement consisted of at least seven rectangular hut foundations and associated rectilinear and curvilinear enclosures. Five of the hut foundations were examined, as well as large areas of enclosure, and three c…

From George Monck to the Duke of Albemarle: His Contribution to Charles II's Government, 1660-1670
George Monck was the architect of Charles II's Restoration in 1660. Thereby he earned fame among royalists and was damned as a traitor by republicans. His personal myth was forever preserved in English history with his Restoration of Charles II. What he did in the remaining ten years of his life (1660-70) has been less studied by historians. This article examines his contribution to Charles II's Government as Duke of Albemarle. Although Albemarle…
