Understanding atypical resilience enablers of street youth in Harare, Zimbabwe
There is limited understanding of the circumstances leading street youth to rely on atypical resilience enablers. Atypical resilience enablers are unconventional strategies, often negatively judged by society or the law, which allow street youth to survive on the streets. We respond to this knowledge gap by documenting a 2REST study (Responsibilities for Resilience Embedded in Street Temporalities), exploring atypical resilience enablers of Harar…
Conceptualising street youth lived resilience in African cities
Youth, embedded in street life in African cities, experience multiple daily and longer-term stressors which impact their socio-economic circumstances and capacities to meet their basic needs. Urban contexts of high unemployment, inequality, and poverty result in homeless youth, often with incomplete schooling, unable to secure a decent living through hustling in the informal economy, access safe spaces to sleep, nutritious food, and subject to vi…
Mapping multisystemic protective resources supporting resilience among street youth

While these challenges are well-documented, also in systematic reviews, the resources facilitating street youth resilience to these challenges have not been synthesized. To close this gap, we conducted a systematic scoping review of studies reporting street youth experiences of resources that enabled them to effectively cope with street-related challenges. Scoping the literature involved a syste…
Advancing Children’s Rights through Law and Policy

It is based on a conversation that took place in a webinar hosted by the Policy Working Group of the International and Canadian Child Rights Partnership. Using duoethnography, we delve into three issues: (1) ways children participate in the development of child-related laws and policies; (2) the leverage points for navig…
International perspectives on the participation of children and young people in the Global South
This paper presents findings from a study exploring children’s participation and protection rights. The research was conducted by the International and Canadian Child Rights Partnership (ICCRP) – a multi-sectoral partnership, involving academic institutions, non-government organisations, and young people in five countries. Although funding came from a Canadian federal agency, partners adopted a decolonial approach to break down inequitable power …
Responding to Covid-19 in South Africa – social solidarity and social assistance
In South Africa, the first stringent COVID-19 lockdown led to joblessness, poverty and isolation from protective social networks stripping many families of the resources they needed to care for children. Whilst widespread hardship was reported, this viewpoint teases out the range of experiences to support policy-making for future pandemics. The authors draw on the findings from the National Income Dynamics Study: Coronavirus Rapid Mobile Survey a…

Children and young people’s right to participate in residential care in South Africa
The South African Children’s Act accords the right to participate in all matters to every child of sufficient maturity. This article examines the Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children to analyse the extent of the right in residential care and the degree that this right is realised in South Africa. South Africa’s laws and policies include detailed commitments to ensure that children and young people participate in professional assessment…
