Grief as Epiphanous
Developments like COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter have exposed the distinctive challenges to grief in our contemporary context. This article invites readers to see grief as a choice that leads to revelations about the depths of human connectedness that need to be recognized as integral to the moral life. After studying lament in Black Lives Matter, we focus on what it means to grieve by pursuing three main topics: the Bible and grief, anticipator…
Social Trust and the Ethics of Our Institutions
Social trust is the basic resource for our institutions and is notably maintained by leaders who have what I call a vulnerable style and a vigilant capacity to recognize ethical challenges on the horizon. The essay follows five steps: a meditation on social trust, an introduction to the notion of style, and a proposal for a vulnerable style so as to become collectively capacious for recognition. Then it turns to the two institutions under examina…
Regarding Amoris Laetitia
Five years after its promulgation, the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia is continuing to shape the church by reforming its pastoral ministry in particular, its work in marriage and family life. This essay looks at the key contents of the lengthy document by considering the rich language it uses as well as the varied imaginative modes of reception by bishops, theologians, and lay leaders. It investigates a sustained criticism that argues for …
Linking Human Dignity, Vulnerability and Virtue Ethics
An ethics of vulnerability, that develops out of an imago Dei /human dignity presupposition, can provide a foundation for a virtue ethics that orients us toward the right responsiveness to contemporary challenges. It explores a vulnerability rooted in imago Dei language and then further develops a vulnerability foundation that is based not primarily on need but on capacity. It concludes offering particular virtues (humility, vigilance, mercy and …
Vulnerable to Contingency
Over the past forty years, the administrations of American colleges and universities have developed and expanded the ranks of contingent faculty as an alternative to the tenure line. While acknowledging the gross inequities that divide these two tracks, this essay attempts to awaken tenure-line ethicists through the concept of recognition to the conditions of their colleagues and then argues through the concept of vulnerability that faculty are d…
Pursuing Ethics by Building Bridges beyond the Northern Paradigm
This essay narrates and explores the work of Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church (CTEWC) in developing a network that connects roughly 1500 Catholic ethicists around the world. It highlights the impact that CTEWC has had in encouraging Christian ethics to become more inclusive, active, and mindful in advancing a network that builds bridges beyond the northern paradigm. In this narrative, we see how CTEWC planned and realized three maj…

With Volume 14 The Cambridge Ancient History concludes its story. This latest volume embraces the wide range of approaches and scholarship which have in recent decades transformed our view of Late Antiquity. A picture emerges of a period of cons…

Proposing Cardinal Virtues
