Open Access•Dean Carson, Dean Bradley Carson et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2025•References: 2

This paper investigates rural–urban disparities in the experiences of in‐home care services for older adults in a sparsely populated municipality (Storuman) in Northern Sweden. Such municipalities are characterised by long‐term population loss and ageing, an increasing concentration of residents and services in municipal centres and resultant rural ‘resource deserts’. Disparities are measured through four ‘endpoint’ measures—exits to residential …

Open Access•Doris A Carson, Dean Bradley Carson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 16

This article introduces the special issue ‘Rural hinterland development in sparsely populated areas (SPAs): new challenges and opportunities arising from urbanisation within the periphery’. It problematises the relationships between growing cities and hinterland areas in SPAs, such as those commonly found in Arctic, Outback and similar remote resource peripheries of developed countries. Tourism can influence in-migration to rural areas by enhancing the attractiveness of rural communities and providing opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and volunteer engagement appealing to in-migrants. Much research on the rural tourism-migration nexus has focused on “high amenity” areas characterized by scenic environments and well-developed tourism and service infrastructures. Many communities in inland Australia, however, are in “…

    Doris A Carson, Dean Bradley Carson et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Geographies•2014•Cited by: 16•References: 23

Tourism destinations in peripheral areas are often large regions established by centralised government agencies to encourage collaboration between dispersed communities and foster innovation. Relatively little research attention has been paid to the impact that centrally defined destination boundaries have on whether and how small communities contribute to innovation at a regional level. This paper examines the case of Burra, a small town in rura…

  • Drive Tourism

G Lohmann, Dean Bradley Carson et al.•BOOK•Drive tourism•2010

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and borders every other South American country, apart from Chile and Ecuador. With a landmass of 8.5 million km2, and about twice the size of Europe, Brazil is Latin America’s financial and commercial powerhouse, accounting for approximately 45 per cent of South America’s total economic output. In Latin America, Brazil is second only to Mexico as a tourism destination and, in 2006, had the world’s …
