Tourism policymaking unpacked: Insights into evidence use practices
With tourism policy decisions under scrutiny in light of growing concerns about sustainability, climate change and overtourism, this paper explores the use of evidence in tourism policymaking. The study is based on interviews employing the technique of visual elicitation to stimulate an open conversation (about the use of evidence in policymaking) with politicians and public servants in four destinations: Margaret River and Denmark (Western Austr…

Ability of residents to assess relative risk from tourists during the Covid-19 pandemic
This paper compares relative risk perceptions of residents to inbound tourists from countries with different COVID-19 profiles. Results suggest residents are able to distinguish between COVID-19 risks based on the incidence of COVID-19 in the tourists’ source country. Residents’ risk perceptions were better aligned with the absolute number of cases (ignoring population size) in tourists’ country of origin than with the number of COVID cases per c…
Quality of Employment Index for the tourism sector in developing countries: The case of Uruguay
Although job quality has become an active field of study over the last two decades in developed countries, it still remains an under discussed concept in developing regions such as Latin America, where the incidence of work informality and low wages are particularly high. As quality of employment is a multidimensional concept and not homogeneously defined in the literature, we follow a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to build a Quality of Empl…
Tourism specialisation and education: Leading the way to better labour conditions
This article studies the returns to education in the Argentinian tourism sector considering tourism specialisation. With data from the Permanent Household and Hotel Occupancy Surveys, we make use of Mincer equations to understand the relation between wages and education. For that, we take into account three different types of agglomerates: Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA), agglomerates more specialised in tourism (AT) and agglomerates less …

Evaluating critical links in early warning systems for natural hazards
Early warning systems (EWSs) are extensive systems that integrate different components of disaster risk reduction for the provision of timely warnings to minimize loss of life and to reduce economic and social impact on vulnerable populations. Historically, empirical research has focused on the individual components or sub-systems of EWSs, such as hazard monitoring, risk assessment, forecasting tools and warning dissemination. However, analyses o…
Designing and implementing more effective Integrated Early Warning Systems in mountain areas: A case study from Northern Italy
It is essential to consider and to understand the social context in which an Early Warning System (EWS) is planned and to integrate all of its components, otherwise it is likely to fail. EWS are complex tools for disaster risk reduction which are only effective if they generate an appropriate response in the exposed population. Any effective EWS relies on the reaction capacity of all stakeholders. This reaction capacity is strongly dependent on h…
Learning from young people and from our own experiences in Barrio San Jorge
This paper brings together the perceptions of three youths from Barrio San Jorge, a low-income settlement located in the municipality of San Fernando in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, and the more technical views of three adult researchers working in the same barrio with the Instituto Internacional de Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo—América Latina (IIED—AL). It highlights youth’s perceptions and aspirations within a context of neighbourhood upgr…
