From understanding to influence: The interplay of AI literacy, self-efficacy, and trust in predicting communication students’ AI adoption and word-of-mouth
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into academic and professional practice has profoundly shaped the communication and public relations domain. However, there is limited empirical understanding of how individuals actually perceive and use these new technologies. Therefore, this article investigates Communication and Public Relations (PR) students’ perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically aiming to …
Weaponization of Memory. The Populist Mobilization of the Distant-Past in Romania
This article explores the strategic (mis)use of historical memory by populist political actors, focusing on George Simion, leader of the Romanian radical-right party Alliance for the Unity of Romanians. Through a detailed case study of the Valea Uzului Cemetery controversy, the research examines how populist movements construct and disseminate exclusionary historical narratives to mobilize affective publics, reinforce nationalistic ideologies, an…
Student’s digital competences in Belgium and Romania: A comparative analysis
This research explores students’ digital competences level in three major universities from Belgium and Romania, based on a combination of seven core skills: communication and collaboration skills, creativity skills, critical thinking skills, information skills, problem-solving skills and technological skills. We applied a quantitative design based on an online survey, applied during March 2021–May 2022 using Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The stu…
The autobiographical archive in post-communist Romania: “True” heroes and collective victimization
Considering the emerging field of anti-totalitarian collective memory of communism, this article explores the interplay between the autobiographical archives and the public discourse on memory. It questions the appeal for establishing the “true” history of communism as it is reflected at the autobiographical archive level. Based on Elisabeta Rizea’s relevant case study and using a comprehensive approach addressing the discourse on memory in Roman…
Community, Social Capital and Festivals. A Pandemic Perspective
This paper focuses on the complex relationships among social capital, community development and festivals. The Covid-19 pandemic put a lot of pressure on festivals, forcing an entire industry to adapt and recreate itself. In the restricted sanitary context, the pandemic festivals redefine the sense of events, of community and of social interactions. The empirical data, comprising in-depth interviews with the organisers of the first festival in Ro…
GIFs as floating signifiers
This paper investigates GIFs that use famous paintings and art collages in order to discern if their possible interpretations justify the label of ‘floating signifiers’. For this purpose, I explain what ‘floating signifier’ means and describe what happened with the term when it was correlated with the issues of information and digital materiality. Thus, in new media, the parallel term for ‘floating signifier’ is Hayles’s ‘flickering signifier’. I…
The Rhetoric Imaginary of the Postmodern Discursiveness
This paper underlines the relationship between rhetoric and postmodernism. In lack of (and in spite of) a unique definition, postmodernism is seldom described as a non-centred set of rhetorical, critical and discursive practices; rhetoric offers a fertile frame for the interpretation of postmodernism. In my approach, I analyze both the type of rhetoric through which we can grasp the current of postmodernism (the rhetoric of postmodernism) and the…
