Cyprian
Thascius Caecilius Cyprianus was born in Carthage and converted to Christianity in 245 or 246 ce .
Hippolytus of Rome
What relationship does the statue of the seated figure, putatively of Hippolytus, at the entrance to the Vatican Library, and the titles inscribed on its plinth, have to the writer, a catalogue of whose works appears in Eusebius of Caesarea ( Hist. eccl . 6.22), which is extended further by Jerome ( De Viris Illustribus 61)?
Ignatius of Antioch and the Second Sophistic
The letters of Ignatius of Antioch, whether considered genuine or pseudonymous, have been generally understood as addressing concerns and issues within the Church. Consequently, his language has been read as an expression of second century Judaeo Christianity or as a reply to Valentinianism, with little direct contact or concern with the surrounding pagan culture. Allen Brent submits Ignatius' language to a comprehensive analysis and seeks to sho…
The Enigma of Ignatius of Antioch
If we affirm against recent criticism the authenticity of the Middle Recension of the Ignatian letters, we are nevertheless left with the enigma of Ignatius' relations with Polycarp. This paper explains that enigma in terms of two distinct cultural worlds of early second-century Christianity that come together in the meeting of these two church leaders. Ignatius was the first great missionary bishop who reinterpreted church order, the eucharist a…
Cyprian's Reconstruction of the Martyr Tradition
Cyprian attacked the claim of the confessing martyr to give absolution independent of the more formal authority of a bishop on the grounds that this practice was radically new. But Cyprian ignored the antiquity of the martyr tradition. The act of confession that involved acute physical suffering had itself been sufficient for ordination earlier, just as it had been sufficient to replace baptism. Reconciliation of an apostate previously took place…
Ignatius of Antioch and the Imperial Cult
Diogenes Laertius and the Apostolic Succession
The cultural and historical location of the concept of ςιαςοκή in second century claims about the apostolic succession has been widely debated. In England, under the influence of Ehrhardt, the term is generally taken to be used by analogy with the sacerdotal succession of Jewish high priests, and to derive from the influence of James the Just on Jewish Christianity. In Germany, on the other hand, following Campenhausen, ςιαςοκή has been understoo…
