Thoughtlessness in the Age of Homeland Security: Race, Surveillance, and Bureaucratic Violence in Immigration Enforcement
Resilience and the Management of Nonprofit Organizations: A New Paradigm
This timely book examines the serious threats that pandemics, economic recessions, terrorist attacks and other potentially catastrophic events pose to nonprofit organizations. Reliant on donors, regulators, government funders and dedicated staff and volunteers, these organizations are often vulnerable and unprepared to navigate such crises. The book offers a new management paradigm to build healthier and more effective nonprofit organizations for…

Weight gain in captive chimpanzee infants: Comparisons by sex, rearing, and colony
Comparative analysis of weight gain, hand/wrist maturation; and dental emergence rates in chimpanzees aged 0–24 months from varying captive environments
Variability during the first 2 years of growth and development is examined in captive chimpanzees. The mixed longitudinal study of 175 animals compares curves of weight, hand/wrist maturation, and dental emergence for groups within the sample which differ in sex, rearing circumstances (mother-reared versus hand-reared), and colony (Primate Foundation of Arizona, White Sands Research Center, and The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center …
The dis-closure of the world: Adorno, Derrida and Habermas on critique
Discursive and non-discursive events impact simultaneously, and dialectically, on the activity defined as philosophy. The relationship of language to these events, and the activity, has been problematised variously as representing an attempt to dis-close the world to philosophers, and at another extreme, to dis-close it. The role of ‘Enlightenment rationality’ further complicates their projects, as has been acknowledged by the philosophers under …
Ethnographic surreality, possession and the unconscious
In the Second Manifesto of Surrealism, issued by André Breton in 1929, surrealism was described as “a total recuperation of our psychic strength by a means of none other than vertiginous descent into ourselves, systematic illumination of the hidden places and progressive darkening of the other places, a perpetual walk in the forbidden zone”. Surrealism sought to represent the unconscious and forbidden zones of the psyche, of the body, of the noum…
The Grandparent Strengths and Needs Inventory: Development and Factorial Validation
Responses for 2,012 Grandparent Strengths and Needs Inventories (GSNI) by grandparents, parents, and grandchildren were factor analyzed to determine if the underlying structure of the instrument fit the hypothesized dimensions suggested by the position of 60 items on six subscales. Two extraction methods, principal components and principal factors analyses, produced 10 factors with prerotation eigenvalues greater than 1.0. A principal component s…
The Impact of the Anglo-Guatemalan Dispute on the Internal Politics of Belize
In general terms, the framework for dependency perspectives postulates the existence of advanced capitalist economies that subjugate and exploit the natural resources of peripheral economies through commercial and financial mechanisms. Obstacles to the development of peripheral economies include dependence on foreign capital and technologies that do not correspond to needs of the countries, and overall subordination includes political, military, …

Organization and Orchestra: Lessons from the Pit
Intellectual progress frequently is made in one field by drawing on the experience of another field, even one that appears remote and unrelated. In this note, I want to illustrate the point by indicating a few lessons and insights that public policy analysis and management might derive from its very distant cousin, the field of music. Specifically, I will focus on three classical problems of organizational management: (1) productivity, or more pr…
Linear Nearest Neighbor Analysis
Linear nearest neighbor analysis is reconsidered and revised. This statistical method facilitates decisions about whether points along a line are clustered, random, or dispersed. One of its possible archaeological applications is illustrated using a set of probable housemounds along the Cabeza de la Vaca Arroyo in Veracruz, Mexico. The mounds are in a dispersed pattern. Ecological and subsistence factors offer one promising explanation for the pa…
