  • The Nursing Home as Total Institution: A Case Study and Suggestions for the Aged Care System

    Open Access•CHERRY SWAIN, Jo Harrison•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Social Issues•1979•Cited by: 3•References: 3

A symbolic interactionist perspective is used to examine the effects of institutionalization on residents of a Sydney nursing home. The analysis suggests that much of the ‘negative’ behaviour observed among inmates results from the institutional structuring of a dependence role. Implications for long term care of the aged in both community and institutional settings are discussed
