  • On statistical measures and ancient writing systems

    Open Access•Rajesh P N Rao, Robert J Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Language•2015

An article published in Language (Sproat 2014a) questions our findings on the Indus script and Pictish symbols published in the journals Science (Rao et al. 2009a), PNAS (Rao et al. 2009b), IEEE Computer (Rao 2010), and the Proceedings of the Royal Society (Lee et al. 2010a,b). Sproat’s article does not accurately present our methods and findings, and its conclusions are based on what appears to be a misunderstanding of our proposed approach. For…

  • A Response to Richard Sproat on Random Systems, Writing, and Entropy

    Open Access•Robert J Lee, Rob Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2010•References: 1

In his article "Ancient symbols and computational linguistics" (Sproat 2010), Professor Sproat raised two concerns over a method that we have proposed for analyzing small data sets of symbols using entropy (Lee, Jonathan, and Ziman 2010): first, that the method is unable to detect random but non-equiprobable systems; and second, that it misclassifies kudurru texts.W e address these concerns in the following response. © 2010 Association for Comput…

  • Analysis of Ten Criteria of Student Performance

    Open Access•Erich P Prien, Robert J Lee•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

A factor analysis of 10 student activity dimensions ( N = 48) yielded 3 factors named: social activities performance, structured achievement, and unstructured achievement

  • Peer Ratings and Leaderless Group Discussions for Evaluation of Classroom Performance

    Open Access•Erich P Prien, Robert J Lee•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

An attempt was made to evaluate the internal consistency, temporal reliability, and validity of peer ratings as used in a classroom situation. Twenty-six Ss were divided into four small groups as part of a 6-wk. course in industrial psychology. Ss designed the rating device along four performance-related dimensions. Ratings of self and group peers were obtained at 2-wk. intervals; intelligence and class grades were used as validation criteria. It…
