The Red Cross Call to Serve
After fifteen years, France seems very far away. Blue capes with scarlet linings, gray chambrey uniforms, yellow shoes (often caked with mud), cold drafty barracks, the roll of drums, Old Glory whipping in the breeze, death always at one's elbow, and the thousand and one annoyances incidental to living so unnatural an existence, blur into an unreal picture. It is all like a dream that is past.1
