Counting Modern Slaves: Historicizing the Emancipatory Work of Numbers
Historians, like contemporary activists, use numbers to make moral claims: the greater the number of victims, the greater the moral value of a given phenomenon. But rarely do historians or contemporary activists reflect on how they use numbers or historicize the complex ways numbers have clarified or conversely obscured ethical claims about stopping slavery. In “Counting Modern Slaves,” I examine the particular political work that counting slaves…
Migrant Labor and Global Commons: Transnational Subjects, Visions, and Methods
Despite the prominence of both migrant workers and “global commons” as protagonists in recent meetings of the World Social Forum, few activists or scholars have successfully linked their historical agency or significance. In the following essay, I locate conceptual starting points for linking migrant workers and global commons by analyzing the work of the transnational and the commons in political conversation at the WSF and in the historiographi…
The Nature of Labor: Fault Lines and Common Ground in Environmental and Labor History
Recent efforts to build bridges between environmental and labor history have relied primarily on the idea of alienation, a concept that means sharply different things to each subfield and which represents an incomplete foundation for collaboration. Instead, historians need to analyze and historicize geographies of labor. Comprising the spatial, material, and cultural connections between nature and labor, geographies of labor elucidate not only ho…

Industrial Cowboys: Miller & Lux and the Transformation of the Far West, 1850-1920
In recounting the rise and fall of one of the largest land monopolies in North American history, David Igler weaves together a diverse host of actors rarely found in one historical narrative: Chinese workers, elk, San Francisco meatpackers, swamps, Chicago capitalists, California rivers, Mexican vaqueros, riparian forests, Italian immigrants, salty soil, lawyers, and of course cattle. The central focus of his monograph are the careers of two Germ…

Divided Loyalties: Immigrant Padrones and the Evolution of Industrial Paternalism in North America
When industrialist John D. Rockefeller visited the new open-pit mining operation of his competitor, Daniel J. Guggenheim, in Bingham Canyon, Utah, in 1910, he declared with genuine envy and admiration,“it's the greatest industrial sight in the whole world.” What most impressed Rockefeller were the massive steam shovels that had revolutionized the process of copper extraction by enabling firms to mine and smelt tons of previously worthless low-gra…
