The Peace of Westphalia and nineteenth century German history painting
The apparent dearth of official celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia in Germany in the ‘revolutionary year’ of 1848, as well as of depictions of the Peace of 1648 by German history painters of that time, raises a variety of questions. Much has already been written on the political caricatures of 1848. This paper investigates links between the religious and the political spheres in paintings completed in or around 1848…
Cyborg Selves in Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: The Next Generation : Genre, Hybridity, Identity
Somewhere in that hard-drive that you call a brain is a beeping message: ‘Error. Error. Does not compute. I don't have a soul, I have software. Traditional and Nontraditional Patterns of Female Activism in the United Farm Workers of America, 1962 to 1980
One of the most inspiring social movements of the postWorld War II era was the historic struggle for the unionization of California farm workers that began in the early 1960s. Studies of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO (UFW), and the farm worker insurgency that developed during this period have focused on its leadership and provided a patriarchal interpretation of its origins.1 Perpetuating this view, a recent history textbook noted, …
