This chapter examines the production culture of the film industry of Hong Kong after its 1997 return to China. Drawing from anthropological fieldwork, I posit that the production culture cannot be separated from the larger cultural practices and social formations in which it occurs. Three recurring themes within the film community are examined: decline, flexibility, and marginal social status. The reasons for the industry's decline are explicated…

This article contends that ghosts and gangsters are not merely popular genres in the H ong K ong film industry; they are also legitimate participants in the film production process itself, influencing financial, creative, and logistical resources and decisions. Accidents of equity and the aesthetics of Chinese offshore incorporation
The British Virgin Islands is second only to Hong Kong as a source for foreign investment into China. Over the past two decades or so, Chinese entrepreneurs have demonstrated a preference for incorporating in the offshore finance centers of the Caribbean. This paper focusses on the unpublished love poetry written by the Australian feminist writer, Mary Fullerton, to her life-long friend Mabel Singleton. Most of the poems were written between 1909 and 1924. In her published poetry, Mary Fullerton emphasised the quality of ‘separateness’. In her extensive correspondence with compatriot writer, Miles Franklin, she constructed herself as a woman who lacked the ‘sex instinct’, a ‘go alone’ woman. The e…
