  • Women Workers and Gender Identities, 1835-1913

Carol E Morgan, Carol Morgan•BOOK•Women Workers and Gender…•2013

Women Workers and Gender Identities, 1835 - 1913 examines the experiences of women workers in the cotton and small metals industries and the discourses surrounding their labour. It demonstrates how ideas of womanhood often clashed with the harsh realities of working-class life that forced women into such unfeminine trades as chain-making and brass polishing. Thus discourses constructing women as wives and mothers, or associating women's work with…

  • Women's work, artisanal discourse, and community

    Carol E Morgan, Carol Morgan•ARTICLE•Women s History Review•2001•References: 3

This article is a comment on Sheila Blackburn's response to the author's original essay, ‘Gender Constructions and Gender Relations in Cotton and Chain-making in England: a contested and varied terrain’, which appeared in Women's History Review (6[3], 1997). Perspectives are also broadened to include viewing primary and secondary schools as two different cultures, with appropriate insights from cultural awareness research. Bilingual schooling is seen as potentially …

While scholars have emphasised the positioning of women as wives and mothers in working-class culture in late nineteenth-century England, their position in the workforce remained significant, even in such disparate industries as cotton and chain-making. In the former, while excluded from spinning, women's employment in powerloom weaving brought them into the heart of the production process, encouraging their participation in workplace struggles a…

A set of native French speakers’ student interviews undertaken during a project encompassing the teaching of cultural awareness at Upper Secondary level, has been analysed to assess the students’ cultural competence. The main differences between students’ performances was the level of inter‐activeness or ability to build from the interviewee's responses rather than interviewing from a pre‐programmed agenda. Three different levels of competence ar…
