State of the Field
Monarchy, as the world's oldest and most enduring form of political organization, is an area that has attracted the attention of scholars from a range of disciplines. Two connected and complementary fields embody this interdisciplinary study of monarchy and monarchies: royal studies, which takes an all‐encompassing approach to monarchy, and court studies, which focuses on the mechanisms of courts and the courtiers who inhabited them. This article…

A House Divided
Manning the Margins
The paradox of the masculine fop is one that captures the dramatic imagination, as seen in two characters in recent cinema set in the late seventeenth century: Archibald Cunningham in Rob Roy (1995) and Monsieur (Philippe d’Orléans) in Vatel (2000). Both appear at first as effeminate and therefore harmless, only to surprise their foes (and audiences) with their extremely deadly prowess with the sword. In his latest book, Lewis Seifert helps us po…

From Wives to Widows in Early Modern Paris
This first book by American scholar Janine Lanza is a welcome addition to the ever-growing number of articles and monographs that aim to ‘mainstream’ women in history, by presenting them as complex individuals affected by a variety of pressures and choices, not merely statistics or a universally oppressed subcategory for analysis. Lanza's research focuses on the women of a particular social category, time and locale—the widows of merchants of eig…

Femmes et pouvoir politique
With the continued expansion and flourishing of court studies and women's studies, this volume of essays is a very welcome addition to scholarship concerning queenship in European political culture. Indeed, as set out by its presenters, this collection is intended in part as an addition to previous collaborative works on medieval queenship, and more recent early modern collections by Fradenburg (ed. Women and Sovereignty, [1992]) and Campbell Orr…
Richelieu & Mazarin. A Study in Statesmanship
This book is a welcome addition to the ‘European History in Perspective’ series, a succinct study of the political careers, methods and ideologies of two individuals who shaped conceptions of government for France and indeed for Europe in the seventeenth century. David Sturdy has written this volume as a companion to his earlier book, Louis XIV (1998), in the same series. The author sets out from very start to look at these two individuals togeth…
A Tale of Two Murders. Passion and Power in Seventeenth-Century France
A Lesson in Diplomacy for Louis XIV
Revisionist historians have come to recognize that the most significant marker of Louis XIV's success as a monarch was not to be found in absolutist domination, but in his ability to balance factions, both at his court, in the army and in the administration of France. This article examines a particular event in the early years of the king's personal reign which clearly demonstrated to the young king the benefits and the necessity for such balance…
