Clay tobacco pipes found on former execution sites in Silesia, Poland
This article contains a detailed discussion of clay pipe finds from five execution sites located in Silesia, Poland. The assemblage is dominated by pipes from the 18th century with a small percentage of examples from the 17th and 19th centuries. Mainly Dutch pipes were identified in the analysed group, pipes manufactured in a local workshop, and several examples of pipes made by a different technique. Cílem příspěvku je představení výsledků výzkumů, které byly prováděny na bývalých popravištích v Kamenné Hoře a Zlotoryji (Dolní Slezsko, Polsko). V průběhu archeologických výzkumů v obou lokalitách byly nalezeny pozůstatky zděných šibenic o průměru od 5,2 do 7,5 m a také soubor různých kosterních částí. This paper is the first comprehensive and interdisciplinary presentation of stone walls in the Central European mountains from the perspective of landscape archaeology based on field surveys and analysis of cartographic and LiDAR data. Particular attention is devoted to the so-called 'atypical' or 'deviant' inhumation graves that contained allegedly apotropaic objects or stones placed directly on the deceased as well as the peculiar burials of infants in ceramic vessels.
