  • Saruq al-Hadid

    Lauren Weeks, C M Cable et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 19•References: 53

In this paper, the authors use the site of Saruq al-Hadid – a 'persistent temporary place' located in the mobile dune fields of the north eastern edge of the Rub' al-Khali desert – as a lens to focus discussion on the variable nature of temporary sites and mobile adaptations within the archaeology of southeastern Arabia, the relationships between temporary sites and permanent settlements, and the evidence for collective events and gatherings from…

  • Fuelwood and Wood Supplies in the Eastern Desert of Egypt during Roman Times

Open Access•Charlène Bouchaud, C Newton et al.•CHAPTER•The Eastern Desert of Egypt…•2018

Introduction Due to the scarcity of resources, fuel and wood supply was a major issue in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. This scarcity is caused by the hyperarid conditions that started some 6000 years ago, as indicated by paleo-climatic studies, carried out locally in the mountains of the Red Sea (Butzer 1999; Moeyersons et al. 1999) and west of the Nile (Bubenzer, Riemer 2007), as well as in the wider region (Hoelzmann et al. 2004; Kuper, Kröpelin…

  • Un artiste-antiquaire en Egypte au XIXe siecle, textes reunis par Mercedes Volait

    Charles R Newton, C Newton•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2014

Although Prisse d’Avennes ended his days in poverty, he left a substantial archive (ultimately preserved by the Bibliothèque Nationale) unlike many other artists and scholars. His son wrote a biography, or rather a hagiography. Prisse is an enigmatic figure in the history of Egyptology and the study of medieval Egypt. His work in many fields lives on in the wonderful illustrated books he published, the finds he brought back to France, and in the …

  • Defining Spiritual Growth

    K Gallagher, S K Gallagher et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Religion•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 12

This article explores the concepts, means, and objectives of spiritual growth across four strands of Christianity. Based on focus group interviews and congregational observations within four congregations (conservative Protestant, mainline Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, and an emerging church), we assess the ways in which regular attenders articulate concepts of spiritual growth, the practices that contribute to their sense of growth, and how a co…

  • Fuel and vegetation at Asa Koma (Republic of Djibouti) during the second millennium BC

    C Newton, Stéphanie Thiébault et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Charcoal analyses were performed on hearths and ash layers from a seasonally occupied Neolithic dwelling site in the eastern lowlands of the Horn of Africa, dated to the first half of the second millennium BC. It was suggested by an earlier study that the predominance of two taxa, Suaeda (seablite)/Chenopodiaceae and Salvadora persica (saltbush), could be an over-representation due to the selection of wood for specialized use, i.e. fish processin…
