Emotional Responses to Dreams and Imagination
Are dream emotions fitting
When we dream, we feel emotions in response to objects and events that exist only in the dream. One key question is whether these emotions can be said to be “essentially unfitting”, that is, always inappropriate to the evoking scenario. However, how we evaluate dream emotions for fittingness may depend on the model of dreams we adopt: the imagination or the hallucination model. If fittingness requires a match between emotion and evaluative proper…

Self-Representation and Perspectives in Dreams
Integrative and naturalistic philosophy of mind can both learn from and contribute to the contemporary cognitive sciences of dreaming. Two related phenomena concerning self-representation in dreams demonstrate the need to bring disparate fields together. In most dreams, the protagonist or dream self who experiences and actively participates in dream events is or represents the dreamer: but in an intriguing minority of cases, self-representation i…
Radar Observations of Arctic Bird Migration in the Beringia Region
Bird migration was recorded by tracking radar and visual observations in the Beringia region. The data were subdivided into seven areas extending from north of Wrangel Island southeastward toward the Bering Strait and then northwestward off the coast of Alaska to Point Barrow. The studies, which took place during a ship-based expedition between 30 July and 19 August 2005, recorded a total of 557 tracks (average duration 120 seconds) of bird flock…

What is the “golden standard” for assessing population-based interventions?—problems of dilution bias
OBJECTIVES: To identify different types of dilution bias in population-based interventions and to suggest measures for handling these methodological problems. DESIGN: Literature review plus analysis of data from a population-based intervention against cardiovascular disease in a Swedish municipality. MAIN RESULTS: The effects of an intervention on mortality and morbidity were much more diluted by non-intervening factors, dissemination to areas ou…
Mortality statistics in immigrant research: Method for adjusting underestimation of mortality
BACKGROUND: It is difficult to carry out fair comparisons of the mortality of different ethnic groups in a population in register-based studies because sizeable numbers of immigrants who subsequently leave their new homeland fail to register this fact with the national registration authorities. In this article we present a method which attempts to address these problems. METHODS: Age-standardized mortality rates for native Swedes and immigrants i…
