  • Legal Counsel, Moral Expectations, and Youth with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

    Open Access•Dorsey Spencer, Nathan Innocente et al.•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2025•References: 7

The Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) is the law that governs the Canadian youth justice system and applies to young people between the ages of twelve and seventeen. The YCJA's Declaration of Principle broadly states that measures taken against young people should consider their "special requirements." Such vague provisions have led young people with mental health issues and intellectual and developmental disabilities to not receive much-needed a…

In this paper we situate the act of listening in the context of children’s rights whilst highlighting the benefits of this practice on the psychological and neurological development of children. After unpacking the concept of listening and the role it plays in adult-child communication, we share the results of a scoping review where we examined neuroscientific studies pointing to the benefits of listening and what relevance such evidence has for …

  • Compensating for Stigma

Open Access•D Bendo, Taryn Hepburn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Childhood Studies•2021

We examine 4,300 advertisements of children who were featured in Today’s Child, a daily newspaper column written by Helen Allen in the Toronto Telegram and Toronto Star (1964–1982) and syndicated across North America. We highlight how stigma and values were attributed to adoptive children featured in these advertisements. Our findings reveal how the advertisements perpetuated and attached stigma to these children and how this stigma had to be com…

    Christine Goodwin-De Faria, D Bendo et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Despite the increased risks and vulnerabilities that children and young people face due to the Coronavirus ( covid -19), they are also some of the most active in their participatory responses to this global emergency. Drawing on transdisciplinarity, this paper considers how covid -19 has opened up new spaces and opportunities for the participation of children. For example, young people across the globe have been actively involved in raising digit…

    Open Access•D Bendo•ARTICLE•Childhood•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 66

This article is a response to Karl Hanson's call for the emancipation of children's rights studies from the children's rights movement. It explores the emergence of the children's rights movement and children's rights studies and analyzes some of the key childhood discourses that are emphasized by these two different approaches. As a way to understand why Hanson calls for emancipation, and in an attempt to begin to emancipate children's rights st…

  • Advertising ‘Happy’ Children

    Open Access•D Bendo, Taryn Hepburn et al.•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2019

We analyse 4300 advertisements of children featured in the Today's Child column, a daily written by Helen Allen in The Toronto Telegram and The Toronto Star from 1964 to 1982, to understand how the Canadian public became accepting of the adoption of Indigenous children. While children of all ethnic backgrounds were featured, the Indigenous children who were displayed were part of a larger system of child removal, known as the ‘Sixties Scoop’. We …
