Progressive for all? The experience of LGBTQ+ people in the Scottish social security system
Since devolution in 1999 the Scottish government has worked to advance a more progressive (compared to the UK government) policy agenda across a wide range of policy areas. This included reforms to the social security system which sought to remove some of the stigmatising and punitive aspects of the UK system. In parallel to these developments, the Scottish government internationally portrayed itself as a leader in LGBTQ+ rights. Drawing on quali…
Understanding homelessness and housing among LGBTQ+ people – where are we in 2024
Untangling hope labour from care labour
This article reports on the ‘Whose Rainbow?’ project, exploring LGBT+ staff and students’ conflicted relationships to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) work in UK Higher Education (HE). Drawing on interview data, we illustrate the expectation on LGBT+ people to ‘embody diversity’ within HE, and the labour that comes with such expectation. Whilst most participants undertook some EDI work, they were aware of their own potential exploitation, …
Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals Asset-based Welfare and Housing in Great Britain
The role of housing in providing a welfare asset has been widely explored. With the growth in home ownership between 1979 and 2008 and erosion of the welfare state, housing wealth has become part of the welfare mix in the UK. Here, we present analysis of housing outcomes, as measured in the UK Household Longitudinal Survey (UKHLS), among people who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual in Great Britain. This shows that lesbian, gay, and bisexual …
LGBT 'Communities' and the (Self-)regulation and Shaping of Intimacy
This article draws on UK research with over 600 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT+) people, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (grant AH/J011894/1), which explored understandings and experiences of LGBT 'community'. I examine the ways in which intimacy is regulated and shaped by and within social interaction, which was apparent in three main ways. First, the research identified how for some people the very concept of 'LGBT c…
What and how
As part of a project funded by the Wellcome Trust, we held a one-day symposium, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, to discuss priorities for research on relationships and sex education (RSE) in a world where young people increasingly live, experience, and augment their relationships (whether sexual or not) within digital spaces. The introduction of statutory RSE in schools in England highlights the need to focus on im…
Sex and relationships education for LGBT+ young people
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) inclusive sex and relationships education (SRE) is of growing interest. However, there is a lack of clarity about what LGBT inclusive SRE should/does look like in practice. This article addresses that uncertainty by examining original research findings on innovative youth work based SRE provided within an arts-based project run by a third sector organisation in the North East of England. The research is set…
Limitations of focussing on homophobic, biphobic and transphobic ‘bullying’ to understand and address LGBT young people's experiences within and beyond school
This paper presents new empirical data that highlight how a focus on ‘bullying’ is too limited and narrow when thinking about homophobia, biphobia and transphobia that young people may experience. The paper draws on two recent studies with young lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans participants, which each identified issues and experiences not readily captured within dominant bullying discourses and understandings. Findings are examined within three …
Understanding and Responding to Homophobia and Bullying
Sex and relationships education, sexual health, and lesbian, gay and bisexual sexual cultures
This article draws on three small-scale studies with young people in two cities in the United Kingdom, which sought to gather views on sex and relationships education (SRE) and sexual health, and included those who self-identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB). Participants were involved in detailed self-completion surveys and/or in-depth interviews/focus groups. Each project elicited data about respondents' views on SRE (at school) and how …
Lesbian and bisexual women's human rights, sexual rights and sexual citizenship
Lesbian and bisexual women's sexual health is neglected in much Government policy and practice in England and Wales. This paper examines lesbian and bisexual women's negotiation of sexual health, drawing on findings from a small research project. Themes explored include invisibility and lack of information, influences on decision-making and sexual activities and experiences of services and barriers to sexual healthcare. Key issues of importance i…
‘Selling it as a holistic health provision and not just about condoms …’ Sexual health services in school settings
In this article we discuss the findings from a recent study of UK policy and practice in relation to sexual health services for young people, based in – or closely linked with – schools. This study formed part of a larger project, completed in 2009, which also included a systematic review of international research. The findings discussed in this paper are based on analyses of interviews with 51 service managers and questionnaire returns from 205 …
