Identification of Clinical Phenotypes Among People with HIV Using Electronic Health Record Data
Loss to follow-up (LTFU) from HIV care affects nearly half of people with HIV (PWH). This study aimed to identify clinical phenotypes of PWH using electronic health record (EHR) data and assess their association with LTFU. We analyzed 4,316 visits from 849 adults receiving care at an urban Ryan White Clinic (2017-2020), extracting demographic, social history, laboratory, diagnosis, and clinical note features. Latent Class Analysis identified six …
Understanding Opportunities for Prescribing Pre-exposure Prophylaxis at Two Academic Medical Centers in a High Priority Jurisdiction for Ending the HIV Epidemic
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective yet underutilized tool for HIV prevention. We examined opportunities for prescribing PrEP at two large, urban, academic healthcare institutions. We analyzed electronic medical record data for 1/1/2015-12/31/2021 among patients ≥ 18 years of age, with ≥ 1 negative HIV test with indications for PrEP. Eligible encounters were six months after a sexually transmitted infection, or when injection drug use…
Analyzing Social Support from Facebook on Viral Suppression among Young Black Men Who Have Sex with Men Living with HIV: A Pilot Study
Social support has been associated with viral suppression among persons living with HIV (PWH). We examined cross-sectional data from young Black men who have sex with men to see if sociodemographic factors, medical history, and egocentric Facebook social support measures are related to viral suppression. Differences between participants were examined using Chi-square, Fisher's exact, or Wilcoxon Rank Sum Tests, with significance set at p = 0.10. …

Approaches and challenges to the study of loess—Introduction to the LoessFest Special Issue
In September 2016, the annual meeting of the International Union for Quaternary Research’s Loess and Pedostratigraphy Focus Group, traditionally referred to as a LoessFest, met in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. The 2016 LoessFest focused on “thin” loess deposits and loess transportation surfaces. This LoessFest included 75 registered participants from 10 countries. Almost half of the participants were from outside the United States, and 18 of the pa…
Vegetation dynamics during the Pleistocene–Holocene transition in the central Great Plains, USA
The Holocene–Pleistocene transition in the upland loess-mantled regions of the central Great Plains is punctuated by the Brady Soil, which separates the late-Pleistocene Peoria Loess and the Holocene Bignell Loess. Previous research on the Brady Soil at the Old Wauneta Roadcut site in Southwestern Nebraska has produced paleoenvironmental information based on well-constrained luminescence and radiocarbon ages, stable carbon isotope data, and chemi…
Temporal and spatial variability in dune reactivation across the Nebraska Sand Hills, USA
The Nebraska Sand Hills is a stabilized dune field on the Great Plains of North America. Although it is well known that this dune field, like several others on the Great Plains, last experienced widespread activity during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA, ~AD 900–1300), spatial variation in the timing and nature of drought development is poorly constrained. To elucidate spatial trends in dune reactivation, samples potentially representing MCA a…

Organic stable carbon isotopic composition reveals late Quaternary vegetation changes in the dune fields of northern China
Vegetation changes during the late Quaternary in the dune fields of northern China are not well understood. We investigated organic carbon stable isotopic composition of surface soils, related mainly to the ratio of C 3 and C 4 plants, across a range of arid to subhumid climates in this region. Isotopic composition is weakly related to both temperature and moisture (multiple R 2 = 0.53), with the highest δ 13 C (greatest C 4 abundance) in the war…

Non-linear connections between dune activity and climate in the High Plains, Kansas and Oklahoma, USA
Discrete dune fields are found throughout much of the Great Plains of North America, and the timing of past dune activity is often used as a proxy for paleoclimate because of the intuitive link between dune activity and a more arid climate. This research suggests that feedbacks in the soil-geomorphic system create a relationship between dune activity and climate that varies both spatially and temporally. Older eolian landforms are more resistant …
Mississippi Valley regional source of loess on the southern Green Bay Lobe land surface, Wisconsin
Loess has been recognized on the glacial land surface of the Green Bay Lobe for over 100 yr, but no systematic explanation of the source of the loess has been advanced. Intriguingly, the loess on the Green Bay Lobe land surface is thicker than predicted by regional thinning trends from the Mississippi Valley and is geographically separated from much loess of southwest Wisconsin by a sandy region devoid of loess. Mapping based on soil survey inter…
Holocene climatic changes revealed by aeolian deposits from the Qinghai Lake area (northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau) and possible forcing mechanisms
Previous palaeoclimatic studies in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (NETP) during the Holocene, mainly using lake sediments, have deepened our understanding of the climatic system in this remote region. The timing and forcing mechanisms of climatic change in this region are still controversial, however. Aeolian sand and silt deposits, which are widely distributed in the NETP, can be readily dated by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL)…
Stratigraphy and environmental reconstruction at the middle Wisconsinan Gilman Canyon formation type locality, Buzzard's Roost, southwestern Nebraska, USA
The middle Wisconsinan Gilman Canyon Formation at the Buzzard's Roost type locality in southwestern Nebraska was investigated to document the stratigraphy and to reconstruct the environmental and climate record. The Gilman Canyon Formation was subdivided into three loess units and three soils, with radiocarbon ages constraining it between about 40 ka and 25 ka. Stable carbon isotope ratios, magnetic susceptibility, and carbon content were used to…

Loess record of dry climate and aeolian activity in the early-to mid-Holocene, central Great Plains, North America
Thick Holocene Bignell Loess sections provide new evidence for the timing of early to middle Holocene aridity in the central Great Plains. The immediate source of loess in these sections was dune fields just upwind, based on thickness trends and grain size data. Thus, periods of rapid loess accumulation indicate episodes of extensive dune activity under drier-than-present climate. In typical Bignell Loess sections, a thick zone of coarse-textured…
Late-Holocene dune activity linked to hydrological drought, Nebraska Sand Hills, USA
Dunefields of the Great Plains contain stratigraphic records of episodic Holocene aeolian activity, potentially providing a valuable record of climatic change. It has been dif” cult to establish unambiguous links between activity at speci” c sites and regional palaeoclimate, however. Here we demonstrate that widespread late-Holocene aeolian activity in the Nebraska Sand Hills, the largest dune” eld on the Great Plains of North America, occurred d…
Sources and paleoclimatic significance of Holocene Bignell Loess, central Great Plains, USA
This paper reexamines the stratigraphy, sources, and paleoclimatic significance of Holocene Bignell Loess in the central Great Plains. A broadly similar sequence of loess depositional units and paleosols was observed in thick Bignell Loess sections up to 300 km apart, suggesting that these sections record major regional changes in the balance between dust deposition and pedogenesis. New optical ages, together with previously reported radiocarbon …

Transport Direction of Peoria Loess in Nebraska and Implications for Loess Sources on the Central Great Plains
In the midwestern United States, large rivers draining the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) were the most important sources of Peoria Loess, deposited during the last glaciation. Loess deposition near those rivers may have responded primarily to ice-sheet dynamics rather than direct effects of climatic change. In contrast, it has been proposed that thick Peoria Loess on the central Great Plains was derived mainly from unglaciated landscapes northwest o…

Petaloid Organs Preserved in an Arctic Plant Macrofossil Assemblage from Full-Glacial Sediments in Southeastern Minnesota
A small suite of plant macrofossils indicates that southeastern Minnesota supported subarctic to arctic vegetation 18,700 yr B.P. Fossil tepals of Polygonum viviparum are exceptionally well preserved; they occur with more fragmentary remains of Dryas integrifolia, Vaccinium uliginosum var. alpinum, and probable species of arctic Salix, S. cf. herbacea, and S. cf. arctica. The pollen spectrum from this site is dominated by Picea, Pinus, and Cypera…

Preservation and Recognition of Middle and Early Pleistocene Loess in the Driftless Area, Wisconsin
An exceptional stratigraphic and pedologic record of Pleistocene environmental conditions occurs at the Kieler Site in the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin. Peoria, Roxana, Loveland, and pre-Loveland loesses overlie weathered bedrock residuum. The pre-Loveland unit previously has been included as part of the residuum at other Driftless Area sites. Early and middle Pleistocene loesses in the Mississippi Valley are normally absent at most l…

Transport Direction of Wisconsinan Loess in Southeastern Minnesota
A study of Wisconsinan loess in part of southeastern Minnesota confirms earlier suggestions that much of the loess in this region was not derived flora the floodplain of the Mississippi River. Two Wisconsinan loess units, the Peoria Loess and Roxana Silt, occur in the study area. Peoria Loess, 1-8 m thick, fines systematically eastward from an abrupt western border toward the Mississippi. There are no apparent grain-size trends away from other ad…
