Overview of
Research Summary Social scientists have debated about whether the death penalty and/or executions deter homicides and thus save lives for at least half a century. Recent empirical analyses by Kovandzic, Vieraitis, and Boots (2009) and Land, Teske, and Zheng (2009) implied that if a deterrent effect of executions exists, it is small in magnitude and relatively short term. Discussions of Kovandzic et al. (2009) by Donahue (2009) and Rubin (2009) le…
The Differential Short‐Term Impacts of Executions on Felony and Non‐Felony Homicides
The Short‐term Effects of Executions on Homicides
Does the death penalty save lives? In recent years, a new round of research has been using annual time‐series panel data from the 50 U.S. states for 25 or so years from the 1970s to the late 1990s that claims to find many lives saved through reductions in subsequent homicide rates after executions. This research, in turn, has produced a round of critiques, which concludes that these findings are not robust enough to model even small changes in sp…
Pre-service correctional officers
Gender Differences in Felony Court Processing
Interactive analyses examined three related hypotheses of disparity. The typicality hypothesis proposes that women are treated with chivalry in criminal processing, but only when their charges are consistent with stereotypes of female offenders. Selective chivalry predicts that decision makers extend chivalry disproportionately to white females. Differential discretion suggests that disparity is most likely in informal decisions such as charge re…
The Position of the Victim in Criminal Procedure — Results of a German Study
In the last few years, the crime victim has moved into the forefront of criminological research and criminal justice policy. This is a worldwide development. In many countries, including the Federal Republic of Germany, victim protection and victim compensation laws have been enacted. The extent to which such legal steps effect an actual improvement of the victims' situation remains largely unexamined. This paper presents the results of a German …

A Comparative Analysis of Factors Related to Fear of Crime in the United States (Texas) and the Federal Republic of Germany (Baden-Württemberg)
A predesigned comparative victimological survey was carried out in the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany. One of the central purposes of this research was to address the issue of whether the same factors are operative in both societies as predictors of fear of crime. Two questions predicated on the standard fear of crime indicator were employed as dependent variables: fear of walking alone within one mile (one kilometer) of one's …

Comparison of the criminal statistics of the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany
An Analysis of Differential Assimilation Rates among Middle-class Mexican Americans
The investigation focused on the identification of variables which might help explain differential assimilation rates among middle-class Mexican Americans. The data were collected from a random probability sample of 151 middle-class Mexican Americans residing in Waco, Austin. McAllen, and Lubbock, Texas. Three Likert-type scales designed to measure various components of the assimilation process were developed out of items abstracted from standard…
Acculturation and Assimilation
The purpose of this paper is to provide a clarification of the relationship between acculturation and assimilation through the development of a conceptual framework. By means of a careful review of theoretically relevant literature prevalent characteristics related to each concept are delineated and discussed in order to identify and synthesize common, as well as contrasting, elements. A comparison of these elements or characteristics is then und…
