Dispersal ghosts in Oceania
Anthropological genetics helps expand our understanding of human phenotypes in the Pacific, in part because of its focus on gene genealogies to infer past episodes of dispersal and to differentiate these events from adaptations due to long‐duration directional selection. Sewall Wright's 1949 seminal paper on population structure emphasized that there were two strong forces that exerted systematic and therefore determinant pressure on the gene poo…
MtDNA lineage analyses: Origins and migrations of Micronesians and Polynesians
The islands of Micronesia and Polynesia collectively comprise the last major region of the globe to be settled by humans. Both of these groups of islands were colonized within the last 4,000 years by Austronesian-speaking agriculturists. Based on biogeographic and linguistic patterns, central-eastern Micronesia and Polynesia are included by many in a single category called Remote Oceania. Similarities of biologic, linguistic, and cultural traits …
MtDNA and language support a common origin of Micronesians and Polynesians in Island Southeast Asia
The origins and relationships among Micronesians, Polynesians, and Melanesians were investigated. Five different mtDNA region V length polymorphisms from 873 individuals representing 24 Oceanic and Asian populations were analyzed. The frequency cline of a common deletion and the distributions of a rare expanded length polymorphism support the origin of both Micronesians and Polynesians in Island Southeast Asia. Genetic, linguistic, and geographic…

The Military and Politics in a Theocratic State: Iran as Case Study
This article analyzes the internal as well as the external factors that have contributed to civilian control of the Iranian military in the last decade. The internal factors include the indoctrination of the military with Islamic ideology and internal division among various segments of the armed forces. The external factors, however, encompass the emergence of premilitary groups the Iran-Iraq war and the Russian influence within the Iranian milit…
DNA and Human Origins
Infrastructures are material forms that allow for the possibility of exchange over space. They are the physical networks through which goods, ideas, waste, power, people, and finance are trafficked. In this article I trace the range of anthropological ...Read More
