  • Mapping the Determinants of Female Employment

    Open Access•Raquel Simón-Albert, Raquel Simón‐Albert et al.•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Economische en…•2026•References: 76

This paper examines the territorial determinants of female employment rates using labour market areas (LMAs) – functional units based on commuting patterns – to mitigate the Modifiable Area Unit Problem (MAUP). Drawing on detailed Spanish census microdata and spatial econometrics, we find that male unemployment negatively affects female employment through a discouraged worker effect , whereas higher shares of part‐time jobs, medium household inco…

  • Lock-in, resilience and path development in old industrial regions

    Open Access•Jesús M Valdaliso, Pablo Suárez et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2026•References: 62

This paper examines why some old industrial regions (OIRs) show strong lock-ins while others experience weaker ones. To do so, it compares the resilience of two OIRs in northern Spain — Asturias and the Basque Country — to major shocks and structural changes over the last fifty years, tracing their divergent development paths and advancing a tentative explanation for these differences. It employs a mixed-methods approach, combining dynamic shift-…

  • The design of an eco-tax on tourism waste for sustainable destinations, based on environmental efficiency and spatial dependence

  • Optimal carrying capacity in rural tourism

    Open Access•José F Baños, David Boto‐garcía et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Management•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 79

This paper introduces a novel framework for characterizing destination overcrowding in rural tourism using a production approach. We build upon destination life cycle, carrying capacity, and consumer preference theories to characterize optimal levels of overnight stays in the presence of disutility from crowding. Using panel data for rural tourism in Spanish provinces, we model crowding non-linearly as a demand shifter within a service production…

  • Consumers' demand for operational licencing

    Open Access•David Boto‐garcía, Roberto Balado‐nave et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 68

Since July 2021, Airbnb discloses whether listings in Paris hold a mandatory registration number to legally operate. Grounded on information asymmetries and moral hazard theories, this paper studies consumers' preferences for certifications of legality and minimum quality standards. We exploit the staggered disclosure of licences over time to evaluate the change in demand (reviews) compared to those that continue offering their properties without…

  • Cross-domain comparison and the politics of difference

Open Access•Rogers Brubaker, Matías Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2019•Cited by: 9•References: 59

This paper makes the case for cross-domain comparison as an undertheorized form of comparative analysis. The units of analysis in such comparisons are not (as in most comparative analysis) predefined units within a domain or system of formally similar yet substantively different categories or entities; they are the domains or systems of categorically organized differences themselves. Focusing on domains of categorical difference that are central …

  • The spatial structure of the labour market across public jobcentres. Does their accessibility matter

  • Hanging Out Together, Surviving on Your Own

    Open Access•Matías Fernández, Matías Mayor•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 19

How does one make sense of a group of migrant men who spend much of their time together over several years, share a space as well as a social position, and behave in some respects like close friends, yet do not develop stable relationships of solidarity and collective forms of self-perception? What are the micro-foundations of these precarious communities? Drawing upon eight months of ethnographic fieldwork at three day labor sites in Los Angeles…

  • Evaluation of the Spanish flat rate for young self-employed workers

Open Access•Begoña Cueto Iglesias, Matías Mayor et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2017

  • Spatial panel data forecasting over different horizons, cross-sectional and temporal dimensions

Mayor M., López A. J. and Pérez R. (2007) Forecasting regional employment with shift–share and ARIMA modelling, Regional Studies 41, 543–551. The analysis of different economic situations and risk factors is necessary in order to define forecasting scenarios properly. The paper focuses on the shift–share model as a useful tool in the definition of scenarios, based on the different components contributing to the change of a given economic variable…
