The paper examines the structural and socio-psychological factors which have led to the emergence of new types of relationships such as, cross-sex colleagueships and cross-sex friendships, and to a new value placed on intimacy. Because people are now involved in a wide range of relationships, studies of relationships should start from the individuals, map all the relationships in which they are involved and examine the interrelations between the …

  • The Options of Greek Men and Women

    Constantina Safilios-Rothschild, Constantina Safilios‐rothschild•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1972•References: 3

Liberation is a better concept than for several reasons. First, a woman but not a man can be emancipated, while both men and women can be liberated. Second, a woman was considered emancipated if she voted, smoked, drove a car, went out by herself, worked, etc. That is, the designation emancipated was given when a woman was behaving in a particular manner that showed independence and, to some degree, equality with men. A woman or a man is defined …

  • A Cross-Cultural Examination of Women's Marital, Educational and Occupational Options

    Open Access•Constantina Safilios-Rothschild, Constantina Safilios‐rothschild•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1971•Cited by: 11

The examined cross-cultural evidence indicates that women may come to have many options in very different types of societies and through very different combinations of social, political, cultural and economic reasons. Furthermore, there is no linear relationship between a country's level of economic development and the range of women's options in different life sectors. Thus, the option not to marry becomes much more of an option for men and wome…

Family modernity is conceptualized as the degree to which a multipicity of equally acceptable models of familiar behavior co-exist so that individuals have a wide range of options as to what type of "family" to have and how to behave as family members. Family as well as societal and individual modernity are seen as multidimensional and the inter-relationships between these three levels of modernity examined. Since no specification of the content …

    Constantina Safilios-Rothschild, Constantina Safilios‐rothschild•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1969•Cited by: 4

Most sociologists who have studied the familial power struc ture have equated it with decision-making. (Blood and Wolfe, 1960; Burchinal and Bauder 1965; Buric and Zecivic, 1967; Heer, 1962; Safilios-Rothschild, 1967; Wilkening and Morrison, 1963.) Although such an equation simplifies methodology, it tends at the same time to reduce power structure to an almost static phenom enon. The process of decision-making is quite intricate and its dynamics…

  • Honour' Crimes in Contemporary Greece

    Constantina Safilios-Rothschild, Constantina Safilios‐rothschild•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•1969•Cited by: 20

Honour, as the core of one's essence representing one's masculine or feminine integrity, is the prevalent value in the traditional culture of Mediterranean countries.' Unless one is a member of the upper class or the power echelons of the society, social acceptance is not possible in the absence of unspoiled honour.2 Closely connected with honour is the concept of shame: an individual usually feels ashamed when he is dishonoured in the eyes of hi…

  • A Comparison of Power Structure and Marital Satisfaction in Urban Greek and French Families

Constantina Safilios-Rothschild, Constantina Safilios‐rothschild•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1967•Cited by: 19

Data based on interviews with a random sample of 133 Athenian wives indicate that, in contrast to highly industrialized countries, the Greek husband's possession of a high education, skilled or prestigeful occupation, and high salary tends to diminish rather than increase his authority in the family. In practically all circumstances, the two decisions relating to the choice of friends and the use of leisure time are predominantly masculine, while…
