The Power and Promise of Postpartum Self Care: Evaluation of a Web-Based Tool for Underserved Women

From effectiveness to sustainability: Understanding the impact of Care’s Community Score Card© social accountability approach in Ntcheu, Malawi
We evaluated the sustainability of CARE’s Community Score Card© (CSC) social accountability approach in Ntcheu, Malawi, approximately 2.5 years after the end of formal intervention activities. Using a cross-sectional, exploratory design, we conducted 41 focus groups with members of Community Health Advisory Groups (CHAGs) and youth groups and 19 semi-structured interviews with local and district government officials, project staff, and national s…
Mixed race in Argentina: Concealing Mixture in the ‘White’ Nation
In this article, we will address questions and arguments about the collective memory that members of the Charrua People began to raise more than twenty-five years ago in Uruguay, at a time when they self-identified themselves as Descendants. In the framework of the debates about settler colonialism””which support the ideologies of whitening and exceptionality of the countries of the Plata””, we will examine the trajectories that led them to conso…
“Invisible Indians,” “degenerate descendants”: Idiosyncrasies of mestizaje in Southern Patagonia
In Argentina's Southern Patagonian region one often hears that the Tehuelche people were the "only" and the "true Argentine Indians," that they "became extinct [se extinguieron]," and that only a handful of "descendants" remain. Paradoxically, this utterance ("se extinguieron") – in the passive voice, with no subject, in which there seems to be no agent responsible for the alleged extinction – takes place in a context of the re-emergence of the T…
A framework on the emergence and effectiveness of global health networks
Since 1990 mortality and morbidity decline has been more extensive for some conditions prevalent in low- and middle-income countries than for others. One reason may be differences in the effectiveness of global health networks, which have proliferated in recent years. Some may be more capable than others in attracting attention to a condition, in generating funding, in developing interventions and in convincing national governments to adopt polic…
Agenda setting for maternal survival: The power of global health networks and norms
Nearly 300,000 women--almost all poor women in low-income countries--died from pregnancy-related complications in 2010. This represents a decline since the 1980s, when an estimated half million women died each year, but is still far higher than the aims set in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the turn of the century. The 1970s, 1980s and 1990 s witnessed a shift from near complete neglect of the issue to emergence of a ne…
Argentina
As happened in other South American countries, the process of state consolidation in Argentina required the building of a nation. The local elites running the state agreed on a national, white‐European project, different to other Latin American countries that embraced mestizaje as a national ideology, veiling the presence of Afro‐Argentineans and indigenous peoples and celebrating the European migrations. Territorial conquest and citizenship work…
Achieving the Goal of the London Summit on Family Planning By Adhering to Voluntary, Rights-Based Family Planning: What Can We Learn from Past Experiences with Coercion
The 2012 London Summit on Family Planning refocused attention on family planning, garnering much-needed support for the goal of reenergizing and expanding programs in 69 low- and medium-income countries enable 120 million more women ... to use contraceptives by 2020. (1) Although the response to the summit's initiative (referred to as FP2020) was generally positive, reproductive health and rights advocates expressed concern that the focus on a nu…
Voluntary, Human Rights–Based Family Planning: A Conceptual Framework
At the 2012 Family Planning Summit in London, world leaders committed to providing effective family planning information and services to 120 million additional women and girls by the year 2020. Amid positive response, some expressed concern that the numeric goal could signal a retreat from the human rights–centered approach that underpinned the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development. Achieving the FP2020 goal will take concer…
The proportion of Cuban smokers in the contemplation stage places the country in a favorable position for developing effective smoking prevention interventions. The majority of the factors identified (age when smoking began, number of cigarettes consumed daily, and number of attempts to give up the habit) can be modified through preventive actions. Identifying the stages in the process of change and the factors linked to them are necessary for de…
