Implications of Endogamy in the Southwest Eurasian Highlands: Another look at Jack Goody’s theory of production, property and kinship
Reviving interest in Jack Goody's comparative and historical work on systems of production, kinship and state organization prompts us to revisit his analysis in 'Production and Reproduction' – looking both at the data and at the explanatory framework. Mode of Production
Mode of production is a conceptual tool of Marxian materialist historical analysis. It explains how society, with its system for production and distribution, can be conceived as a social formation in which individual actors independent of their representations and justifications reproduce the system. Marx and Engels's definitions and descriptions of varieties of mode of production were developed with reference to early anthropological research. L…
Remembering and Living on the Borderlands in the South Caucasus
Past border regimes of porous borders and mobilities for trade and labor in the South Caucasus play an important role in the narratives from these former Soviet borderlands. Since 1991, the nature of these borders has changed in surprising ways. They have become international borders with technologies and ostentatious symbols of state securitization and sovereignty. The more intimate and functional character of these borderlands has changed too. …
Re-thinking Citizenship in the South Caucasus
This essay presents research results from a Max Planck Research Group project in which six researchers examined the three components of Marshall's concept of citizenship in Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey. The essay compares these components with other approaches to citizenship, arguing that processes such as migration, the stricter enforcement of borders and the introduction of new global players and markets to the region allow citizensh…
Masquerade and postsocialism: Ritual and cultural dispossession in Bulgaria, by Creed, Gerald
Preface to the special issues
Introduction: Claiming Social Citizenship
Social citizenship in the classical sense of T.H. Marshall has been declared to be eroded and to have lost its significance. The introduction to this special issue challenges this assumption and argues that recent anthropological work on social citizenship in post-colonial, post Cold War and post-socialist states have shown that social citizenship is relevant and is being claimed by citizens of these states. Historical notions of citizenship as w…
